Five Children on the Western Front: The Psammead and the Children return!

Wow! I would not have thought a continuation of an old favorite series, "The Five Children and It", "The Phoenix and the Carpet", and "The Story of the Amulet", would be desirable. E.Nesbit's writing was so wonderful, her stories so enchanting, they are a hard act to follow. Kate Saunders story, "Five Children on the Western Front" is a well-written continuation, with all of our favorite characters, including the irascible Psammead. Wishes are granted, the children travel in space and time; the magic is still there! This is a hard story to read, as the Great War intrudes on the lives of our beloved family of adventure-loving children. Saunders keeps the story moving while allowing us to foresee the possible deaths of the now young-adult brothers. There is a visit to The Professor, with him wiping away tears after the children depart. Even the Psammead seems less happy, if that is possible. Slowly the story winds down to its inevitable end. Worthy of reading and re-reading, for teens and adults who loved E. Nesbit's original stories, and always wanted more.

Jolly well done

I had high expectations and this book lived up to them. Every now and then there was a break where Saunders wouldn't capture the period dialog perfectly, but it was never enough to pull me out of the story and in general Saunders did very well. Four of the five children are nearly grown up and the story centers around the Lamb, now in public school, and a new sister who hadn't been born during the Psammead's prior visit. Saunders ably shows how the War turned the world inside out, changing expectations and attitudes in a way that still reverberates, and I think Nesbit would have approved.

Avoid sequels at all costs

I grew up with the E. Nesbit books and I was so excited when I heard this sequel had come out. I found it very disappointing and not particularly well-written. In trying to capture the flavour of the era, Ms. Saunders has gone way over the top with arch dialogue which detracts from the spirit of the original books and makes the children appear to be rather idiotic and plastic rather than the very individual and real characters they were. Lesson learned: avoid sequels at all costs.
