About the Author

David Garmus is a published author and acknowledged authority in the sizing, measurement and estimation of software application development and maintenance. As a co-founder of the David Consulting Group, he supports software development organizations in achieving software excellence with a metric-centered approach.

Mr. Garmus is a Past President of IFPUG and a member of the IFPUG Counting Practices Committee. He has a BS from the University of California at Los Angeles and an MBA from Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. He has spoken at numerous conferences and written many articles and books on various measurement related topics. 

Garmus is a Certified Function Point Specialist, having fulfilled all IFPUG requirements for this title under all releases of the IFPUG Counting Practices Manual, as well as a Certified Software Measurement Specialist.

Janet Russac has more than 25 years of experience as a programmer, analyst, and measurement specialist in software application development and maintenance. She is the founder of Software Measurement Expertise and leads a team of experienced consultants that offer expertise in function point analysis, software measurement, estimation, auditing, training and mentoring. She is a published author, who presents workshops at companies, professional organizations, and conferences and is often a featured speaker at conferences.

Ms. Russac served as the Chair of the IFPUG Management Reporting Committee from 2002 to 2004 and led the creation of an international industry certification process for individuals in the field of software measurement as Certified Software Measurement Specialists. She currently serves on the IFPUG Counting Practices Committee and the IFPUG Communications and Marketing Committee.

Russac is a Certified Function Point Specialist and a Certified Software Measurement Specialist.

Royce Edwards is a Senior Consultant for Software Composition Technologies, where he applies function point analysis and software estimation techniques to resolve business challenges in software development organizations. He is a software management professional with over 25 years of experience in development, reverse engineering, systems administration, architecture, and software analysis. Mr. Edwards brings an accomplished and unique skill set to software measurement and estimation. He has advised a diverse list of clients in the telecommunications, manufacturing, scientific, government, and information technology areas, and has mastered the adaption of solutions to meet the needs of varied organizational environments.

Mr. Edwards frequently teaches workshops related specifically to web application measurement. He has presented research papers at conferences and has written articles and white papers for various publications. Edwards is a Certified Function Point Specialist (CFPS) and a member of the IFPUG Counting Practices Committee.

This book may or may not prepare you enough for the exam

This book has typos throughout the book and the answer key... which may confuse answers to very common questions you will see on the exam. I read through the book and did each practice exam twice and it helped for the certification exam, but I wouldn't say that it fully prepared me. This is a very challenging certification exam and the best advice I can give you is to study the Counting Practice Manual (CPM) to the point where you memorize the definitions (Part 5), know the detailed explanations from each chapter(Part 2,3), and be familiar with the examples in (Part 4). You absolutely have to know the material to take this test. This book does not test you for a portion of challenging question that you will face during the exam. This book is a good study guide and will help you learn the material, but it may or may not prepare you enough to pass the test.

Winkler's judgment as to what must be kept and what may be dropped is unerring, and his literary skill has enabled him to fashion a text that reads smoothly. Locke's Essay is a massive, scarcely organized work that is easy for students to get lost in and difficult for teachers to lend coherence to. But Winkler's abridgment succeeds remarkably at bringing out the underlying structure of Locke's masterpiece without sacrificing any of the long and important passages that put the meat on that structure. I didn't think this could be done until I came across Winkler's abridgment. It certainly makes teaching Locke much easier, since it makes the structure of the Essay more apparent, and leaves the teacher thus freer to concentrate on the details of the text. I know of no passages from the Essay left out of this abridgment that I would prefer to use in a lower-level class. If anything, I would have made the abridgment shorter still. But to my knowledge, nobody has yet done a better job than Winkler. --Michael Rolf, University of Pennsylvania

About the Author
John Locke (1632-1704) was educated at Christ Church, Oxford and held various academic posts at that university, lecturing on Greek and rhetoric. However, his interests lay in medicine and the new experimental sciences and in 1667 he became personal physician to the Earl of Shaftesbury. Under the influence of Shaftesbury, Locke developed his ideas on politics, property, trade, monarchy and the mind. Shaftesbury became a bitter opponent of Charles II and was involved in the plot of 1683. This forced Locke to flee in exile to Holland, but he returned after 1688 and began to publish his most famous works. He wrote also on tehology, education, and in defence of religous tolerance, while founding the analytic philosophy of the mind. Roger Woolhouse is Professor of Philosophy at the University of York. He has also edited George Berkeley's Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous for Penguin Classics.

Locke has a very materialistic view of the world stating that we do not possess innate ideas at birth. Personally, I think it we are born with some innate ideas and those ideas can only be expressed once we accumulate some experience.

Those little Hackett paperbacks are a great bargain. That's why my Philosophy teacher has the class buy all of their books this way. We had to buy four little books for the class, and why pay a lot for each one? This arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

Great book, easy to read, good reflections and an extraordinary woman. Looses one star for all the formatting errors and the unsupported Table of Content.

I will remember the chapters about social companies, the reflections about relationships and the 13%.

There need to be more people like Anita, in the business world. Real, raw, vulnerable, fearless and different thinking, she nicely captures the essence of being human while conducting business. I gave this book to several of my managers as a Christmas gift.

About the Author
Mark M. Lowenthal has over thirty-nine years experience in U.S.intelligence. Dr. Lowenthal has served as the Assistant Director of CentralIntelligence for Analysis and Production, Vice Chairman for Evaluation onthe National Intelligence Council, staff director of the House PermanentSelect Committee on Intelligence, offi ce director and as a Deputy AssistantSecretary of State in the State Department s Bureau of Intelligenceand Research (INR), and Senior Specialist in U.S. Foreign Policy at theCongressional Research Service, Library of Congress. Dr. Lowenthal haswritten extensively on intelligence and national security issues, includingfive books and over 100 articles or studies. His book Intelligence: FromSecrets to Policy (6th ed., 2014) is the standard college and graduate schooltext on the topic. Dr. Lowenthal received his BA from Brooklyn Collegeand his PhD in history from Harvard University. He is an adjunct professorat the Johns Hopkins University; he was an adjunct at Columbia Universityfrom 1993 2007. Currently, Dr. Lowenthal is President and CEO of theIntelligence & Security Academy, an education and consulting firm.

Essential reference work

Mark is arguably America's foremost intelligence historian, and especially strong on analysis and oversight. The seventy-page bibliography he has put together is useful. There are other much longer annotated bibliographies, but this one reflects value in its selection and conciseness.
