About the Author

Frank Siccone Ed.D. is an educator, author, and organizational leadership consultant. For three decades he has been offering workshops to teachers and administrators throughout the country, and has conducted youth leadership training for students not only in the United States, but also from Russia, and South Africa.

 

Dr. Siccone has written a previous book on school leadership entitled, The Power To Lead: A Guide For School Administrators On Facilitating Change. His first book, 101 Ways to Develop Student Self-Esteem and Responsibility was co-authored with Jack Canfield (co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul). His books have been translated into Chinese, Czech, Russian, and Spanish. He has taught classes and workshops at several colleges and universities including the California State University, East Bay and San Bernardino; San Francisco State University; University of California, Riverside; the University of San Francisco; and the Leadership Institute at Yale University.

 

In addition to his work in education, Frank has also consulted with an impressive list of corporate clients such as Cisco Systems, Hitachi, Intel, Pepsi Cola, Sprint, Sun Microsystems, and Walmart.com. Among the nonprofit organizations with whom he has worked recently are the California Association of Student Councils, The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and Green For All.

Wisdom and insight

I highly recommend this book to any school administrator who wants and needs insights into how to work effectively with teachers and parents. Dr. Siccone is able to offer practical, easy to access tips and strategies on how to communicate, manage, and effectively support your educational community. Having participated in Dr. Siccone's workshops years ago, I can guarantee he is someone who offers
powerful techniques for generating a productive and successful school environment.

This has been an excellent book to use with new and experienced principals. Reading, discussing and working through this book together has provided a forum for rich conversations and a renewed commitment to doing what is right and best for students. The readily available materials and activities are excellent. We are becoming better leaders because of the work we are doing together in this book.

A Blueprint for School Leaders

Essential Skills for Effective School Leadership by Frank Siccone is sprinkled with many thought provoking quotes and parables. The first, however, from John Quincy Adams, sets the tone for the entire book "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." Siccone, from this point forward lays out a blueprint school leaders can follow for transforming a personal vision into reality.

Siccone's blueprint begins with personal development, segues into relational, and team strategies in both human factor and instrumental domains. Within the book's pages are found considerable assessments and worksheets that a leader can apply to any school improvement scenario.

His section on communication and learning styles is cogent. He continually builds on learning style principles in later chapters artfully weaving accrued self-knowledge into practical application.

Siccone's critical contribution to the literature on school leadership is his understanding of the preeminence of context. The author expounds on the concept that successful schools are products of school cultures that promote trust, collaboration, communication, and vision. The book's organization builds on these concepts with how-to worksheets that facilitate school work study teams to transform ideas into actions for their schools.

Siccone identifies the contextual qualities that characterize quality leadership and then provides a usable set of assessment and action tools to bring the vision into reality. In Common Ground, Gary Okihiro uses the experiences of Asian Americans to reconfigure the ways in which American history can be understood. He examines a set of binaries--East and West, black and white, man and woman, heterosexual and homosexual--that have structured the telling of our nation's history and shaped our ideas of citizenship since the late nineteenth century. Okihiro not only exposes the artifice of these binaries but also offers a less rigid and more embracing set of stories on which to ground a national history. Influenced by European hierarchical thinking in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Anglo Americans increasingly categorized other newcomers to the United States. Binaries formed in the American imagination, creating a sense of coherence among white citizens during times of rapid and far-reaching social change. Within each binary, however, Asian Americans have proven disruptive: they cannot be fully described as either Eastern or Western; they challenge the racial categories of black and white; and within the gender and sexual binaries of man and woman, straight and gay, they have been repeatedly positioned as neither nor.

Okihiro analyzes how groups of people and numerous major events in American history have generally been depicted, and then offers alternative representations from an Asian-American viewpoint--one that reveals the ways in which binaries have contributed toward simplifying, excluding, and denying differences and convergences. Drawing on a rich variety of sources, from the Chicago Exposition of 1898 to The Wizard of Oz, this book is a provocative response to current debates over immigration and race, multiculturalism and globalization, and questions concerning the nature of America and its peoples. The ideal foil to conventional surveys of American history, Common Ground asks its readers to reimagine our past free of binaries and open to diversity and social justice.

Is there an "American" culture or are our supposed common experiences and assumptions merely a social construct largely created by a dominant white European elite? Okihiro, professor of international and public affairs and director of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University, examines traditional fissures in American life from an Asian American perspective. Okihiro provocatively suggests that our view of nineteenth-century transcontinental expansion from East to West ignores the role of Asian immigrants moving in the opposite direction. Similarly, his portrait of the 1993 Columbian Exposition suggests it extolled the advance of white civilization, viewed African civilization as barbaric, and virtually ignored the role of East Asian civilizations in forming American "character." Okihiro paints with a broad brush and probably draws unwarranted conclusions from scanty and disputable data. Common Ground, Uncommon History Text

Usually I find it very hard to find a captivating history textbook, especially one on American History. When my U.S. History professor required us to read from this text, I definitely had my doubts on being able to sit and focus on reading it. I quickly came to the realization that this book was by far more engaging and imaginative in terms of painting social inequalities than any of the other books I was required to read for the same course. Even though we weren't required to read the entire book, it was written so well that I actually could not put it down! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the connections between assumed dichotomies for 20th Century American History. Even all you non-fiction wary readers should take a look at this book!

About the Author
Max Wheeler is Reader in Linguistics at the University of Sussex where his research focuses on phonology, and on change in inflectional morphology. He is joint editor of the electronic Journal of Catalan Studies. He is co-author with Alan Yates and Nicolau Dols of Catalan: A Comprehensive Grammar
(1999).


Alan Yates, born in Northampton in 1944, is Emeritus Professor of Catalan at Sheffield University where he worked for 30 years, after graduation (1966) and then a Ph.D. (1971) from Cambridge. His teaching and research straddled the fields of the language and the modern literature of the Catalan-speaking lands. He has published several books and numerous articles in these fields, now keeping a foot in both by devoting himself to literary translation. The rest of his time is devoted to mountaineering and nostalgic fell-running.

Complete, Comprehensive Catalan For All Learners

If you are searching for a the most complete, extensive book on learning Catalan, then you search has ended. "Catalan: A Comprehensive Grammar" by authors Max. W. Wheeler, Alan Yates, and Nicolau Dols is the best book on the market in learning this widely spoken Romance language.
Published by the magnificent British publishing giant, Routledge Press, this book will give you the lowdown on everything you need to read, write, and understand Catalan. Grammar, structure, verb conjugations are all covered here. Mr. Yates, who in my opinion is one of the best Catalan linguists in the world, previously wrote the excellent "Teach Yourself Catalan" book, which was the first book that allow me to comprehend Catalan in little time.
Both Wheeler and Yates, who are professors at two universities in Great Britain, along with Dols, who teaches at a university in Spain, have done an excellent job in capturing the essence and importance of this language.
While Catalan is primarily spoken only in four countries (Spain, France, Andorra, and Italy), it is a language that should be studied by those interested in Catalan studies. Travelers and businessmen to Catalonia and the Balearic Islands will find this book helpful in learning this language, that although it is the seventh most spoken in the European Union, it is not officially recognized by that organization.
If you want to learn Catalan, I suggest the following books.
(1) "Teach Yourself Catalan" by Alan Yates
(2) "Catalan Sin Enfuerzo" by the Assimil staff (for Spanish speakers wanting to learn Catalan)
(3) "Catalan-English Dictionary" by the Routledge Press staff (It is about $30)
(4) "Cambridge Word Selector: English-Catalan" by the Cambridge University Press staff.
With these books, you'll be mastering this once-forbidden language in no time. No trip to Barcelona, Catalonia, or the Balearic Islands can be fully enjoyed without learning the native language of the region's inhabitants.

A complete survey of the language

Routledge's and Blackwell's "Comprehensive Grammars" are perhaps the most complete linguistic surveys made today. Whether you're travelling to Catalonia, wish to read Catalan poetry, or are just linguistically interested in Catalan, this book can help you get an orderly and thorough understanding of the language, regardless of your initial level.
While Catalan has undergone serious standardization programs in recent years, it still has wide regional variation, and this book addresses it fairly good. Besides, the book is very detailed (like all the books in the series I mentioned above), so you may wish to skip some parts of it if you use it just for reference.

Highly recommandable for both learners and linguists

This grammar, written by a team of excellent experts in Catalan linguistics, is useful to both (foreign) learners of the language and scholars of Romance or General Linguistics. The content is well structured and accessible to the non-expert, but without being superficial as happens with many learner's grammars. Being written in English and published by a reknown publisher, it reaches a large readership, which it deserves. The book also successfully tries to be complete on the level of linguistic variation, with different dialectal areas (Catalonian as well as Valencian and Balearic Catalan) and social strata being considered. There are other useful sources for either the learner of the language or the linguist, written in Catalan, Spanish, or even English (e.g. José I. Hualde's 1992 grammar published by the same publisher), but for the time being, I would recommand the Wheeler et al. book as the best choice for the learner and the second best choice for the linguist (the best linguistic choice being the "Gramàtica del català contemporani" reference grammar published in 2002 but difficult to get hold of outside Spain).
