Terry Albert has been working with dogs for over 25 years as a dog trainer, foster home, and pet sitter. A long-time Lab owner, she has previously written books about Basset Hounds, Labrador Retrievers and Boxers. Her writing credits include Petco, PetDoc.com, Delta Society, and numerous websites and newsletters.
Deb Eldredge, DVM, is a graduate of Cornell and the winner of the Gentle Doctor Award for best client care. She is also an award-winning writer, the author of 10 books on pets, and the past President of the Dog Writers Association of America.
Don and Barbara Ironside have owned Labs for 38 years and shown them in conformation, obedience and hunting tests. Under the name Fawnhaven Labradors, they have owned and bred multiple breed champions and hunting dogs. Essential handbook for raising a Labrador puppy.

Like the previous reviewer, I'm a long time dog owner but I haven't had a puppy for ten years or more. Like that reviewer, I also purchased several books about the Labrador. While those books had a lot of interesting information about the history of the breed and so forth, most of the practical information was general and not overly helpful. On the other hand, this book has become my go to reference. It's provides excellent Lab specific information directly relevant to the age of your puppy as it develops over the first year. The specifics on training, care, and socialization are detailed, helpful, and ,most important, specific enough that they are both practical and directed at exactly what you need to know when you need to know it. If I had to buy only one book on raising a Labrador puppy, this would be it.

A "Nice to Have" book

I have had a lab in the past, and we just got a new puppy.
I hadn't a dog in ten years, and I wanted to read up. So, I bought about 12 books. I didn't really go to this one right away. Now that my puppy is 13 weeks old I find myself picking it up and getting helpful information related to the exact age of the dog. So, if you are buying a bunch of books, yes, get it. Its nice to have. If you are only buying one or two, probably not. This is not a "must have". You want a more general overview there are several.
