Excellent textbook!

I've been using this textbook for the past three months and it has been very helpful. Rather than just drilling grammar rules and vocabulary, the book also adds a lot of insight on Korean culture. I've especially enjoyed the articles on the meanings of blood types in Korea, the worst western names to have Korea, and some Konglish jokes. The authors have created a book that is very fun to read while also getting across important language and grammar rules and including very practical conversation practice.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn Korean in a fun way! This is no boring book. It makes a difficult language easy and fun to learn.

An excellent textbook for everyone!

This textbook teaches what i wasn't taught in my korean classes. It helps me in my daily life and i get to know more about korean culture.

It is an interesting book for everyone who wish to learn korean. Unlike the usual textbooks with lots of grammar and vocabulary, it focus more on korean culture. The book has helped me, i will recommend the book to my friends who want to learn korean!

Excellent must-have book to study Korean (WITH FREE AUDIO files)

It's obviously an indispensable book to cover the gap between the beginning and the intermediate levels.
There are tonnes of multi-level serial textbooks from universities which require years for mastering Korean language. However if you have to grasp the core Korean quickly to interact with Koreans (which actually allows you to obtain proficiency quickly and naturally) you have to use this book as your highway, not an exhausting dirt road.

The main drawback of this book is its bad advertising and the lame official book review from which you couldn't possibly guess that every Korean line in every unit (with a parallel English translation where needed) has already been recordered in mp3 audiofiles which can be downloaded here: http://wildkorean.blogspot.de/p/audio-file-download.html

Yes, there is a mistake on the book cover: it mentions the wrong internet link for the downloadable files. I guess that something bad has happened to their old Blogpost account.

It is difficult to believe but the authors also provide FREE offline study classes in Seoul using this book http://wildkorean.blogspot.de/p/classes-and-events.html!!!!

excellent resource

As both a healthcare professional and an educator, I strongly recommend this text and the the ideas it encourages us to think about as we interact with others. It was written for occupational therapists, but is important reading for any professional (physical therapists, nurses, physicians, social workers, educators etc)that needs to obtain medical or social histories from others. It provides a theoretical background as well as a " technique" to obtain a client's "story", not influenced by our own cultural lens, our own experiences or "place" in life.

Brilliant, empirically supported approach

Dr. Stosny has hit a grand slam home run, again. The healing approach in this book grows from the same fertile bed of research and clinical experience that made his boot camp for resentment, anger and abuse reduction so successful. It focuses on a betrayed person claiming and creating for him or herself a Healing Identity. This changes a betrayed person from a victim to an empowered person able to successfully choose improvement, healing, repair, recovery and growth over pain, suffering and shame. Betrayal can cause the betrayed person to feel inadequate and unlovable, the admission of which is too painful to admit. Stosny, as in the boot camp, provides practical steps that replace that loss of worth or value with ways to value yourself more, so much so that external adversity cannot touch the core of one's value. Stosny goes on to provide very wise counsel and steps when one betrayed seeks to love again, either in a new relationship, or in rebuilding a betrayed relationship. This reviewer is a marriage counselor, who has used Dr. Stosny's approach, now wonderfully set forth in this book, with many couples over the past years. It works, and works very effectively. This book is easily accessible by non-clinically trained readers, as it is written for the betrayed partner. Counselors and therapists will find it a valuable resource to grow their skills in helping couples and to give to couples with whom they work. This reviewer cannot recommend this book more highly. It warrants wide distribution to both audiences: couples and clinicians.

I liked it - but several weak areas

This was a helpful read with a really valuable and important premise. However, if you have history of trauma, this book should be used in conjunction with professional help. I really like the idea of building a healing identity and investing in your core value as a path to healing. Some things I thought were lacking: 1) the traumatic nature of betrayal was inadequately dealt with 2) self-compassion is a vital part of the recommendations in this book but it was not fleshed out well 3) there is was not enough instruction on how to help yourself when you feel vulnerable emotions. That being said I've gained something quite useful from reading this book and would recommend reading this while working with a professional. Betrayal is rarely something that can be worked through on your own.

This book gave me a lot of useful ideas and exercises that I can put in place now to heal and recover from my spouses infidelity. It has helped me to focus more on the future and how I can move forward rather than obsess about the past.

A satisfying conclusion (?) to another great Feist saga

There is a difference in this saga than the former, and many have already mentioned that it seems to hurry along too much.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series, but thought the ending was a little "too easy" and just too expected. I was hoping for something more.
I disagree with others that say the characters were not interesting, i was happy to re-visit Pug, Calis and Tomas all over again.
Alot of people also gripe about the revelation of mysteries previously proposed in the previous series. Well, as a long-time reader of sagas that just never die (DragonLance), I was thoroughly happy to finally learn WHO Macros, understand Miranda's history and I love the "Simpkin-like" (Weis/Hickman reference) character in Nakor.
Everyone is a bit too critical, but i agree that it was sad to see Midkemia reduced to ruin. Parts of the story were EXTREMELY SAD, but then, all characters cannot live to be realistic.
I feel Raymond's goal in this series was to put to rest an excellent era of life on Midkemia. Some have mentioned the posibility of another book, I feel one could be written, but this ROADK really seemed like an end-all to everything.
Also, this has to be the most reviews I have ever seem on Amazon... wow!

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE EVER READ!

The thing I liked most about this book was Fiest accomplished what he couldn't before and what most writers cannot and that is really making the reader feel a loss when a character dies.
Yes, its sad when you have a favorite character and they die, but I want to really feel heavyhearted as if someone really did die. I want the books realistic as possible. Isn't this why we read these books? We read to enjoy them, to laugh and yes to cry!
Unfortunately, when characters die in recent fantasy novels (which is rare), I feel nothing. Probably because the characters feel nothing. When Lockleare died in "Prince of the Blood" I wanted James to be really hurt by his best friend's death. There really wasn't much written of this. When Arutha died, again I wanted to feel James' hurt, but I didn't in the "Shadow of a Dark Queen". At least not until "Rage of the Demon King" that I finally got my true feelings from James. The loss of Arutha hit Ja! ! mes hard as he himself describes. The deaths of some other characters were written beautifully. I truly was saddened. This is what we should feel. Fantasy is fiction yes, but it reflects life in all aspects. "Rage of a Demon King" accomplishes this. All good guys do not always live forever and those that do happen to die are not immediately forgotten. If readers want to read a book and feel like what they are reading is actually happening, then PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!

Your History Revisited

I really appreciate the fact that the 2 previous reviewers took some time to give a critical analysis of this important book.

However, I would hope that in the future they would check their own facts before making brash statements, which themselves were off base.

First of all the author was not the artist who rendered the pictures for the book. In fact each page has his signature at the bottom. If the reviewers had done their homework they would have noted this easily discernible fact about the book.

Secondly, if they had noted this properly they could have done a simple search right here on Amazon.com and found that the artist had books out of his own on African American history.

Thirdly, this book is a reprint of the original edition published in 1940 by the author. It is now being published by Black Classic Press. The very first page following the copyright page is a "Publisher's Note" stating giving a brief synopsis of the author's history, a bibliography of books that he's written and information about the origins of the artwork.

This is important to note, because the book itself was a compilation of articles which appeared in Black newspapers all over the country. So, to charge him with being unscholarly, would be akin to calling Ripley of "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" fame unscholarly. These articles were meant to catch people's eye and give them cause to think about what African people have contributed to world history.

Lastly, the references given to J.A. Rogers other more scholarly books, which did contain references, was made on that very same first page. Admittedly, as Black Classic Press clearly states, J.A. Rogers was a "race" man and was attempting to prove a point, so at times some of his facts may come into question.

J.A. Rogers is "the historian" that was most vociferous in bringing to light many of the stories we now accept as being the bedrock of Pan-African Studies, or Black Studies. He was also known for using photography in conjunction with his historiography. This is a real sore point when acquiring his works now being published by large companies like Macmillian & Co., where the literally hundreds of photos of people or statues of persons have been excised from his major work "The World's Great Men of Color." This really diminished the impact of his work, because, as we all know, a picture is worth a thousand words.

In conclusion, I'll be the first one to admit that I just recently noted a discrepancy in a depiction of the 11 churches of Lalibela Ethiopia, which are monolithic structures carved out of the bedrock of the Ethiopian highlands. Mr. Lee made them look like large mudhuts, as opposed to the architectural masterpieces that they are in actuality.

Overall, I've noted the book is fairly accurate in it's portrayal of the personalities and events, but I wouldn't place give them any more, or less credibility than "Ripley's Believe It Or Not," whose museum in Hollywood is a real eye-opener.

So, while you're fact checking, why don't you check into the validity of "Ripley's Believe It Or Not." Meanwhile, I think I'll keep supporting African American Museums and historical sites, who undoubtedly owe a great deal to J.A. Rogers, as one of the pioneers in the study of Pan-African history. By the way the newest museum of African American history will be opening soon on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as a part of the Smithsonian, I wonder who they'll feature in their exhibits?

GOOD FOR MATERIAL, TERRIBLE FOR FACTS

Joel Augustus Rogers was a field anthropologist and "self-trained scholar" of African-American studies who has basically been forgotten today. This book 'Your History' is really a collection of various mini-articles about black people: famous, nonfamous, and infamous. It's a lighthearted look at various people, mostly those whom time forgot. The format of the book is akin to a comic book: on average, there's about 4-5 articles per page in which each has a picture (drawn by Rogers himself) and description of whom or what the article is about.

However, a warning is in store: Readers should take some of what Rogers says with a grain of salt. I say this because some of what Rogers asserts in some of his articles is painstakingly obvious bias for the African-American cause. Some of the "facts" are mere opinions that the "self-trained scholar" Rogers tries to pass on as semi-factual, and even then, these follies fall short of believability.

To make matters worse, Rogers fails to provide any of his reference materials for attentive readers. I'm not saying that I wanted a reference section because I think Rogers is a complete liar about everything he wrote in 'Your History' -- quite the contrary. But what I am saying is that in passages where he makes obviously biased assertions of people or places, he fails to list any reference material to back up what he preaches.

For instance, in one section Rogers explains to us that the Chinese Nakhi people contain a considerable amount of African strain in their blood... Although I've heard this Asian-African relation before, I can also say that I've never seen any reference material or anthropological, biological, etc., -type research to corroborate the statements.

Another example of this book shortcomings is the article of Muhammad, the Islamic prophet. Roger asserts it was said that Muhammad was very dark in terms of skin color. I've also read historical Islamic writings that state Muhammad was extremely light-skinned... the lack of references really makes Rogers' work suffer overall.

All in all, although this is an inadequate volume of any realistic and largely historical measure, it is "classic" for the simple fact that Rogers reveals the names and lives of many interesting black people whom we would literally never know anything about if it weren't for his work.

Brief edition is vastly different than the regular addition thought the covers look the same.

Blue bottom on front cover is brief edition & black at the bottom is the regular edition. There is a difference in the way it is set up. My professor said it was the same but when we got into studying for exams I struggled. 90% of the class was lecture so when she assigned reading I couldn't find what she was asking for. Parts of chapter 4 in the regular addition are in chapter 3 in the brief. Know which one you need for class. The covers should have more changes than a color stripe at the bottom to distinguish which book is which. Getting the wrong book will make an easy class hard. I learned the lesson the hard way so you wouldn't.

didn't know it was going to be an instructor edition, sneakkkyyyy...

the book itself is great except for the fact that the seller gave me an instructor edition! this is why i'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. they put stickers on every part where it said instructors edition. the stickers bothered me so i carefully ripped them off and it was actually an instructor edition book. luckily i was able to sell it back to my school's bookstore because it said the instructor edition is not resellable.
