About the Author

Robert B. Cialdini is Regents’ Professor of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University, where he has also been named W. P. Carey Distinguished Professor of Marketing. He has taught at Stanford University and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He has been elected president of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award of the Society for Consumer Psychology, the Donald T. Campbell Award for Distinguished Contributions to Social Psychology, and the (inaugural) Peitho Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Science of Social Influence.

Dr. Cialdini attributes his interest in social influences to the fact that he was raised in an entirely Italian family, in a predominantly Polish neighborhood, in a historically German city (Milwaukee), in an otherwise rural state.

Good guide to the tactics of persuasion.

Right away, buyers should know that Cialdini has produced a less-expensive version of this book. "Influence: Science and Practice" is designed as a textbook for classroom instruction. So, it has things like chapter summaries and questions that can be assigned as homework. However, the other book "Influence: the psychology of persuasion," is designed for a more general audience. The content is basically the same, but it omits the classroom-oriented layout. It's also cheaper. If you are a student who is buying textbooks online, this is probably what you (or rather, your professors) want. If not, get the other one.

Both books focus on persuasive tactics. This is not a theoretical work trying to lay out a strategy of communication, like "Getting to Yes." This is a toolkit, designed to give the reader a selection of tools for specific circumstances. That is not to say that Cialdini lacks an understanding of more strategic thinking, just that it isn't the focus here.

The underlying theory is that people tend to be hardwired to respond to certain stimuli in predictable ways. The book tells you what those stimuli are, that is, how to push people's buttons. And it does a very good job, which is why Cialdini has demand for two versions of the same book.

I'm not going to list all of the tactics because the table of contents does that and, because they're detailed, they're difficult to understand without reading the book. But, they all have some basis in science and their effectiveness is empirically demonstrable, so you can trust that they work. The best part of this book, for me, was becoming more conscious of how others, including politicians, advertisers, and bosses, try to manipulate me. Cialdini deserves respect just for opening people's eyes, but he goes a step further by explaining ways to deal with the constant manipulation that is inherent in human communication.

The only problems I see are that the textbook version (this one) has a better index in the editions I compared, so it makes a better reference tool and that the book is written from an American cultural perspective. That's fine, as most of his audience is American, but, and this is my M.A. in Int'l Relations talking, I wonder how well some of these tactics would be recieved by people from other cultural backgrounds. In particular, notions of authority (which constitute a chapter) vary widely. Just a heads up. This is still a "must read" for people who want to know how to persuade or protect themselves against other's persuasion.

Great book with ideas that anyone can benefit from.

This was a great book. I come from a technical background, and as most people know engineers are horrible at influencing others. But this book taught me a lot of simple ideas that are applicable in helping to motivate others to my point of view and also how to recognize when others are using these techniques and how to defend against them.

The book has 6 different concepts and it goes into the psychology of each (at a high level), some examples of it, and a few testimonials from readers. It was a quick read and held my attention throughout.

As a side note, in case you are comparing editions. The "Influence Science and Practice" seems to be the most recent version. The "Influence psychology of persuasion" book looks like the same book with an earlier copyright. Skimming through the chapters of both they look like the exact same text, so you probably don't need both.

Incredibly Influential, Powerful, and Useful!

"Influence" by Robert Cialdini is one of the most wonderful and influential books I've ever read! Other books have been written on the topic, but Cialdini's is the best and most influential of them all.

"Influence" deals with the study of persuasion, compliance, and change - a subject that has application for every area of life. Cialdini presents the latest research on influence in a compelling way, clearly stating the 6 principles of influence and providing wonderful illustrations of each principle from advertising, psychology and other fields. If we understood these 6 principles better, we would be less subject to manipulation from others (for example, the manipulation to buy things we don't need or to buy more than we need). We might, in turn, also be able to understand how to influence others for good.

The 6 principles of influence are:

1. The Rule of Reciprocation: "We should try to repay in kind what another person has provided us."

2. Commitment and Consistency: "Once we make a choice or take a stand, we will encounter personal and interpersonal pressures to behave consistently with that commitment."

3. Social Proof: "We determine what is correct by finding out what other people think is correct."

4. Liking: "We most prefer to say yes to the requests of people we know and like."

5. Authority - we have a deep-seated sense of duty to authority

6. Scarcity - something is more valuable when it is less available

I find that in my own life, these 6 principles are remarkably powerful and have the ability to explain a lot of the behavior I observe as a father, teacher, and priest. We would all benefit from memorizing and mastering these six principles. They are simple but extremely powerful. My daughter read this book when she was 14 or 15, and I had to wrestle with her to get it back because she loved it so much! I only hope she doesn't begin using the principles against me!

One of the best parts of the book is the wonderful examples of each principle that Cialdini provides. An experiment to demonstrate the principle of authority, conducted by Stanley Milgram, is the classic example. In this experiment, two volunteers show up to help with an experiment, purportedly to test the effect of punishment on learning and memory. A researcher in a lab coat with a clipboard explains the experiment to the volunteers and that one is to take the role of the Teacher, who will administer increasingly higher levels of electric shock to the other volunteer, the Learner. Every time the Learner got a question incorrect, the Teacher was to administer a higher level of shock. However, the real experiment was to test how willing the Teacher was to administer pain to the innocent Learner, who was not really another volunteer but an actor pretending to be in increasing stages of pain. The results shocked everyone, for Milgram discovered that about two-thirds of the subjects were willing to administer the highest level of electric shock. The reason? Their deep-seated duty to authority.

Influence is filled with many such fascinating and useful examples of how our lives are influenced by others. I highly recommend the book to all readers, for influence is something common to us all, for good or for evil.

Still savouring the series and looking for number three

In my last glowing review I hinted that book two followed its predecessor and even surpassed it. Mark Frost has again proved his worth with the pen by generating a first class teen thriller that I am pleased to say this adult also thoroughly enjoyed. Characters were nicely fleshed out and we got a chance to know them better. Good guy Will obviously is coming into his own with his ‘powers’ and there is a sense of maturity about his abilities and how he uses them. Best not divulge too much in this review and I suggest you backtrack to book one before pursuing this. You will not be disappointed.

You may have noticed in most of my reviews that I do not go into the plots and storylines too much as I think the thrill of any good book is the sense of discovery that happens when you go into a novel blind. So maybe this review is not so much a prese of the storyline but a simple recommendation. If it gets you to reading this series then my job is done. As an author, myself, I hope that reviews of my work also encourage others to pick up a copy, read and recommend it to their friends. Peter Eerden

Good, but not as good as his first...

I really enjoyed this book, although I found it took me longer to get into than the first one. I didn't really appreciate the 'love triangle' aspect of the book, and I found the eventual betrayal a bit predictable in light of Will's whole romantic entanglement with Brooke and Elyse.

I still enjoyed the way Frost incorporated 'Dad's Rules into the narrative, but I think, overall, this book lacked the freshness of the original. Part of it was the fact that Will's character, in particular, was more broken. I felt the development of the relationship between Will and Elyse a bit contrived, and I thought Nick's character degenerated into a mere caricature of himself, for muscle and comic relief, but with none of the substance of the first book.

I also found the terminology, introduced in the first book, but constantly reiterated in this book of the enemy, called 'the Other Team' to be grating. I accepted in the first book, although I thought it was a bit ridiculous, but to have Will and his Scooby gang constantly talking about 'the Other Team' in all seriousness and gravity just felt a little bit too much. I could accept 'the Other Team' as a nickname which the teens use to avoid a long winded name, or as code for something else, but coming from the Hierarchy as the official name for the bad guys strained credulity. Surely an author of Frost's talents could have come up with something better.

That being said, Frost's descriptive writing was excellent, the quest was tense, and I was left wanting more, so I think he did his job. As much as I might like to nit pick on the few things that bothered me, I think it was a solid second instalment, which perhaps didn't live up to the potential of the first. I will read the third before I completely make up my mind about this series.

The story was good but a little bit like the first book with a bit more information about the characters and the reason for why things were happening, but I was a bit disappointed with the ending, now I have to wait for the third book to come out before I know the full story.

A fun novella

An engagement party should be a fun and exciting time, especially for a bride-to-be, but future bride Lizzie Hart is dreading hers. She’s crazy in love with Blake Morgan, an investigative reporter for the Liberty Chronicle, but knowing their families will meet for the first time that evening is filling her with massive anxiety. There is no question in Lizzie’s mind this meeting with be a disaster—and it is. The evening starts out badly and quickly goes downhill. The mothers hate each other and Blake’s brother shows up with the woman who left Blake at the altar, but things really get interesting when the mayor turns up dead in the yard. Since the mayor’s recent (and unfounded) allegations against Blake’s family’s business caused them to lose a great deal of money, Blake is naturally considered a prime suspect. It’s up to Lizzie to make certain her future husband doesn’t spend the rest of his life in prison.

My Funny Valentine, a novella by Caroline Fardig, is a great addition to a really entertaining series. I love Lizzie. She’s a fun lead protagonist who is surrounded by a cast of quirky characters. Although her job at the Chronicle is that of copy editor, she frequently helps Blake with his investigations. The story moves along at a brisk pace, and the dialogue is always humorous and engaging.

I had mistakenly thought the series was over after Book 3 so I was very happy when I found out Lizzie and Blake were back in another adventure. The next book (Wedding Bell Blues) is due out this summer. I can’t wait for Blake and Lizzie to finally tie the knot. Of course, knowing Lizzie, it won’t be an easy trip to the altar. Happy reading!

Smart and Funny Mystery

My Funny Valentine – book 4 of the Lizzie Hart Mystery Series-was my introduction to this fast paced, cozy mystery.
Lizzie, the main character is spunky and lovable. Along with her fiancé, Blake (an investigative journalist), they fall upon the mayor’s dead body at their engagement party.
The relationship between Lizzie and Blake is endearing and there are plenty of humorous lines throughout the novella.
The author has an enchanting way with snappy vocabulary and has lots of suspense that kept me reading along with an amusing mixture of ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends unexpectedly popping up.
Although this was my first Lizzie Hart mystery I didn’t feel it necessary to have read the previous three, but after reading this one I definitely want to read the other books in this series.
One doesn’t have to wait until Valentine’s Day rolls along to enjoy this mystery/romance book that is certain to uplift your spirits.

Lizzy is up to her old tricks

In the fourth book of the Lizzy Hart series, Lizzy is within weeks of her marriage to the handsome Blake. At their engagement party, the obnoxious mayor ends up dead on the patio. That’s never a recipe for a good party. The inclusion of both sets of parents makes the story both humorous and a bit irritating. If I had a mother like either of these women, I would run away from home and change my name. So good is our author's descriptive style, I could taste the desserts, feel the chill in the air, and become rather irate at the unexpected appearance of Blake's former fiancé. Lizzy always seems to solve the case, although Fardig writes some very intriguing scenes where Lizzy finds herself in need of rescue. I eagerly await the next Lizzy Hart mystery. I’ve recommended the Lizzy Hart series to many friends and with the release of this fun read, I will continue to do so.

Surprisingly Good ....

This book was recommended to me by a Facebook page of an author I follow. I read the story synopsis and didn't know if I would like it due to the urban element to it described by some of the reviews. I am not into the"hard core" urban stories but I like read to stories with alpha males and the feisty women they get with. Truly had a very hard and tragic childhood and the relationship with her twin sister was complicated. I am glad their stories were different and befitting of them both. I liked how she would get in Bannon's sh*t when she was pissed with him about things he did and I loved how they loved each other through all their baggage and issues. She had a good heart and was about taking care of her family, even her trifling ass sister.

Bannon, my man, I loved him because he was handsome, rich, well-endowed and as flawed as Truly. He went looking for one thing and got something entirely different. Isn't that how life goes most times. I loved his interactions with Truly, the guys on the block and the relationship with the children. I also loved how he handled his business when he felt his things were violated; as a person who loves gangster movies - he could get gangsta and did numerous times. I liked the integration of the other characters in their story that could possibly lead to future stories about them. Like Athena and Jamie, what happened or is happening with them or other family member. I agree that the story could've been shorter and there were some editing issues but, for me, it didn't make it less enjoyable. If her future books will be this gritty and real with a true love story like this one, I will be a forever fan. This was a very good start for her first widely, published book. I want more just like it.......

A BADD couple..oh yeah

My goodness..this is the BEST book I have read in 2016. TrulyHappy and Bannon Antonov are two of the baddest people I have ever read. Their meeting was as unconventional as one could dream of. Tru comes form the wrong side of the tracks and struggles everyday just to survive. She was dealt a hand that would have caused the average person to just throw in the towel. She is a natural fighter. The odds are heavily stacked against her, her children, her sister and her neighbors.

Bannon Antonov was born with a golden spoon in his mouth. His inheritance once he reaches the ripe old age of 30 is 400 Billion dollars +. He is an a born leader in his family. He is a mover and a shaker. He seems to have the midas touch, but his alter ego is a killer as vicious as he is successful.

What could these two have in common? They both think the other is drop dead gorgeous and they love good music, literature, dancing and sex with the other. Wow, what was supposed to be a one time thing leads to two children for Tru and Bannon.

If you like raw adventure, sensual love and a page turning read.. this is the book for you. At times the editing needed to be done, however, I was drawn in real deep and was on a mission to complete this story.

This is my first read of JanJan Untamed, but if she puts out another one...I am dead on it...
This books even has some helpful hints on how to keep your man from straying outside of a relationship...Tru is an expert on quite a few things in this book..Again a great read...Well done, well done..

Tru and Bannon are everything...dysfunctional but everything

This was like an old school Sidney Sheldon put in the ghetto and then injected with molly. LOVED it. This had me up reading until 5 am. Yeah, the second half could have used some tighter editing (I could feel that the author was pushing to get it all outoutoutoutOUT) but the story had me on the edge of my seat. The writer has a sharp voice, eye for detail, and ear for voices living in the 'hood that, with more polish, could really be great to follow. (Get this woman an editor!)
This is NOT a sweet romance. There are grown ass issues, grown ass decisions, grown ass situations, and that 'view from the bottom' is real, man. It made me flinch thinking about the neighborhood I grew up in and the women I used to know.
But Tru and Bannon are TIGHT. I have never read a square romance couple be down for a MMF hook up just for the heroine's birthday. That ish was amazing. I almost elbowed my sweet guy in his sleep to yell at him, 'Why can't you love me like Bannon loves Tru??' But I didn't. Because I'm not an abused ex-prostitute/addict/exotic dancer with 4 kids and he's not a billionaire/more than slightly psychopathic/married man with attachment and impulse control issues.

The book to help you handle Linux system admin duties with aplomb

This book is borne out of the author's own experiences over the years solving day to day problems in his work. That should give anyone confidence that the examples in this book are as real-world as they can be. Veterans from the DOS days will fondly remember creating batch files to accomplish a myriad of tasks. If you are one of them and switched to an OS like Unix or Linux, this is the book to get. Everything from file permissions, process management, task scheduling, text processing to interactive shell scripting is covered here. Want to backup a folder in the middle of the night and want its status emailed to you? Check. Have a complex operation in mind involving loops, file handling, arrays, functions and message dialogs? The author arms you with the necessary information to achieve that. The final chapters take the readers through understanding the Linux startup process and customizing the system environment as well as using regular expressions for complex pattern matching. A good reference for Linux shell scripting

For sure is not the only book about shell scripting (books on this topic have started since '70 years), but it's really good and with a step by step approach.
You start learning some common Unix commands (included some Unix/Linux concepts), the job control, the text filtering features.
With all this basis you start build some scripts using variables, flows, conditions.
Several tricks are included and also several examples.Finally it's included also a part to build text based window interface with dialog.
Considering that shell scripting is still used (also if languages like Perl, Ptyton, Ruby can totally replace them), this book is really useful for Linux/Unix system administrator and people that need to learn on how programming with shell script language.
