Winter and Luke have been a couple for years, living in New York while Winter’s job took him up and down the East Coast. When he unexpectedly announces one Christmas they are moving, in two weeks, to Berlin for a job without once consulting Luke, well, that was the end of that. You can only be so self-centered before you lose something important. And he did.

Even when he meets up with Luke after six months, he isn’t apologetic or seemingly willing to change. So things don’t go well. Luke’s got holes in his life that Winter used to fill, now what does he do?

While I loved Luke, felt for him and cheered for him right from the start, Winter was not such a win for me. He is supposed to be commanding, I think, but he just came across as selfish for so much of this novella. He was redeemed some by his actions and I'm going to be very hopeful that he's learned a lesson. I’d like to think he has.

Just as an aside - I reread this and the second reading, I loved it. The effort on Winter's part hit me so much more the second time.

Loved this story so much! Angsty yet sweet and very very romantic, especially the Christmas morning scene. Highly recommended!

I was annoyed that Lu gave in so easily - then ran ...

Both characters start at opposite sides, and major changes happen without clear reasons. Winter shows back up, with no explanation or apology, expecting Lu to just forget everything that happened and jump into bed. I was annoyed that Lu gave in so easily - then ran away! And we don't learn how that worked out. Jump ahead to Christmas, and a contrived meeting that ends with everything settled with no real effort or feeling of connection that will keep them together in the future. Not one I will be rereading.

About the Author

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of biology at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to both science majors and non-science majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for non-science majors. Eric is the lead author of the introductory biology textbooks "Essential Biology" and "Essential Biology with Physiology" and is a co-author on "Biology: Concepts and Connections."

 

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). She is the lead author of Biology, Eighth Edition, and Biology: Concepts & Connections, Sixth Edition.

 

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching non-science majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Biology: Concepts & Connections, 6th Edition.

Floppin' all over the place

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this thick book a softcover, I tell you: it was not. The shear weight of this book, combined with the thin, slippery cover, makes it difficult to hold onto the book. Additionally, for whatever reason, whenever I put this textbook into my messenger bag (a regular messenger bag, nothing special), it always ends up bent and wedged under my other books. It's hard to even pull it out because there's no friction. I try to keep my things nice, but this book was the only one in my possession with dog ears and crinkles after merely one semester of use.

Asides from the obvious issue, this book was very informational and to the point, and it explained difficult aspects of biology in such a simple, succinct manner that I learned more from it than I did in many of my previous textbooks. I know I might be unfair if there is a hardcover available, but if there is not, this book can be a hassle. Get the hardcover.

For an introductory Biology class this is a really good supplemental study aid

For an introductory Biology class this is a really good supplemental study aid. I have a terrible lecture professor who barely skims the material, so this text has really helped me attain a better grasp of the material. It is written in very plain language, although there are some particular chapters in the book which are so densely packed with information, anyone can get bogged down by it very quickly. (Cells - omg.) Some of the chapters are short, while others are long, so don't get "used" to a certain time period that you will study for, as for me it varied between half an hour to read a chapter to almost two hours. Even more if you're going to take notes at the same time.

Anyway thank you to the writer and publisher for making this text available as a rental - it saved me so much money, and the content of the book itself is very well organized and written.

Interested in biology? This book is a good choice.

The class is over, but I'm still reading this textbook. I, a former non-biology major, have thoroughly studied units one and two. I didn't appreciate the quality of this book until I purchased other biology textbooks to further my knowledge.

This textbook is easy to understand. It builds your knowledge up from the bottom, and every matter mentioned can be understood if you apply the prior information.

So far, the only exception to the above is the lack of in-depth chemistry in unit one, Cells. It has basic visual models of molecules, but it doesn't go deep into why the chemicals interact in certain ways. Instead, it makes simple representations that convey the functions of the molecules. This is good if you don't want to learn in-depth chemistry, but I found myself wishing I knew more of the chemistry behind the reactions.
However, you might want to skip unit one because unit two, Genetics, is far more interesting. Plus, if you skip it because you didn't want to read about chemical interactions, unit two might do a better job of engendering your interest in biochemistry because you can't understand the functions of individual genes unless you know some biochemistry.

The book's orientation around building your understanding replaces the persuasive argumentation and other rubbish that lurks within other textbooks. There are no separate boxes of text meant to change your stance on controversial issues, nor are there little comics with jokes about current issues. It's just science.

Robert Winch is currently a Senior Software Engineer at VMware and is the project lead of the Spring Security framework. In the past he has worked as a Software Architect at Cerner, the largest provider of electronic medical systems in the US. Throughout his career he has developed hands on experience in integrating Spring Security with an array of security standards (i.e. LDAP, SAML, CAS, OAuth, etc). Before he was employed at Cerner, he worked as an independent web contractor in proteomics research at Loyola University, Chicago, and on the Globus Toolkit at Argonne National Laboratory.

Peter Mularien

Peter Mularien is an experienced software architect and engineer, and the author of the book Spring Security 3, Packt Publishing. Peter currently works for a large financial services company and has over 12 years consulting and product experience in Java, Spring, Oracle, and many other enterprise technologies. Falls flat

Any text book about software these days--especially one about an established Open Source project--has large shoes to fill. It has to be a good reference; it has to be a good tutorial; and above all it has to be better than the available documentation. Let's check those things to see whether this book passes muster.

Connecting an application to the Internet is inherently dangerous: data can leak mostly out but possibly in and your internal systems are exposed in a new way. Security of Web Applications is a serious business and Spring Security is the de facto open source solution to many established problems.

Is this book any good? Well let's look at a scenario. You've been asked to implement social networking Single Sign-On (SSO), a very common feature. Nothing in the index about that. Nor are Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter mentioned at all. You've heard of OAuth. Nothing about that in the index either. Not looking good. So you go to StackExchange to see what other people are doing and you see OpenID mentioned and to your delight you find Chapter 8 is devoted to it although there's nothing about the common use-cases you're after. Chapter 9 is about SSO, which looks promising but turns out to rely on something called a CAS server. You don't have one and implementing one looks hard. For a book with literally hundreds of pages devoted to authentication, I'm afraid it misses the boat on a pretty obvious application of it.

Another scenario. You want to learn about web application security. You're in better luck here because the running example is a representative application that captures interesting aspects of this huge topic. It walks you though configuring log in, log out, protecting specific web pages, users and groups, and salting passwords (LinkedIn take note).

The examples used throughout the book are deep in areas where Spring Security needs explanation. That's good, although it means you have to watch out for a couple of things. First, Spring Security 3.1 does not cover everything you have to do to be secure. Not even close. This book refers to some of these critical vulnerabilities (Cross-Site Scripting, SQL or JavaScript injection) but it is inconsistent. Second, it means the flow of subject matter is often drawn out and interrupted, resulting in a tutorial that's too long to be effective.

A popular format for areas such as application security is a cookbook. This approach often meets the needs of reference material and tutorial better than the linear style of this book.

In summary, while this book is accurate and complete, it is only a piece of the security puzzle. You're largely on your own to find out what the rest is and how to implement it.

Good Book for Start with Spring Security

The author introduces a simple application that is audited for security issues to develop the scenario for the use of Spring Security framework. The topics are arranged in a good progression, from Basic Authentication and Authorization to the use of directory services, client certificates and fine grained access control. A background in application security and web development is required. The book can be used as tutorial or reference book, but you may need other material to complement the topics, specifically when it comes to spring MVC, since the samples and the exposition is very linked to this framework. The code samples include are well written, complete, and are well integrated with the text so the reader can follow the changes in configuration and code without problem. On the negative side the graphics of the printed version are terrible, in terms of design and quality. Overall and excellent book on the Subject of Spring Security but you will need more material to fill the gaps to produce strongly secured application.

Good Spring security reference/ cook book

I found this book useful from alot of perspectives. Having become familiar with some relatively heavy weight home grown security systems used in a Struts 2 environment, this book was a great guide to taking full advantage to the built-in facilities of Spring 3.1 MVC framework for implementing security. Explains alot of built-in Spring MVC facilities that I had not found for Struts 2 framework. Was interesting coming from a Spring and Hibernate Struts env to Spring MVC. Got the source code downloaded and was able to run the chapter 1 example after only a few hours of work. The tutorial instructions were clear and reliable. Great instructions for Spring Tool Suite ( eclipse).
In little time I had the chapter 4 examples running in Tomcat utilizing the H2 database. Impressed with the quality of the examples. The tutorial approach and hands-on development steps are a very effective way to teach all the aspects of Spring configuration and java objects required for security in an application.

After becoming more familiar with the code I needed to consult some other resources on Spring MVC, as this is not the comprehensive guide to creating applications in the Spring MVC framework.

Overall find it to be a great guide for Spring MVC and plan to continue working through the examples and using this to build secure Spring MVC based tools.

This book had all black and white pictures, and almost all of them showed the item in its package. I needed a book to help me IDENTIFY individual figures, which this book DEFINATELY DID NOT DO. I immediately returned the book.

Practical guide for dockerizing a LAMP stack

Containerization is all the hype in 2015 and so I decided to dive into the specifics by migrating a LAMP stack to Docker. This book is one of the few sources that covered most - but not all - of my questions in the process.

Build your own PaaS with Docker is a rather short (~120 pages) introduction for developers and sysadmins new to containerized deployments. One of the most important aspects for me was the discussion of how to let containers communicate between each other - the way a webserver and a database container are used in the book.

What does the book cover?

Chapter 1 is a general introduction to the topic and it covers a trivial hello world example. I must admit I was only able to appreciate the things it taught me when I re-read it after having understood Docker better. I skipped the installation instructions as that isn't too complicated by itself.

Chapter 2 is about the fundamental aspects of Docker: images, containers, and the CLI commands. In the third chapter a new image running Wordpress is created, stepping through the creation of a Dockerfile. Chapter 4 on data containers was a little hard for me to understand as it is. I am still not 100% sure on how to come up with an architecture where to run app containers and which data containers I should define and how a best-practice backup routine would look like.
In chapter 5 containers are connected. This also (briefly) introduces Compose. Using a reverse proxy is covered in chapter 6 and discusses both nginx and haproxy. Finally, chapter 7 goes into the details of how to deploy applications. Unfortunately it does not cover performing updates (e.g. using the concept of immutable servers), which I needed to figure out myself. I do not consider chapter 8 to be on the same level as the others, it merely introduces the concept of 12-facter-apps and gives an overview of the (quickly changing) tool landscape for Docker.

Overall I am satisfied with the book, it gave me much better insight and understanding of fundamental Docker techniques. I guess a single book (especially with just 120 pages) is capable of covering all areas. As such I give it four stars because it is very hands-on and useful to go into practice with a dockerized LAMP stack.

Highlights

For the the example was extremely real-world oriented and I was able to set up my own LAMP stack consisting of dedicated containers per component. The writing is straight-forward and includes the essentials needed to understand what and how to do it.

Lowlights

There are very few conceptual graphics explaining Docker throughout the book. I would have liked to see more - such as how images and containers are related or how connected containers communicate. Only in chapter 6 some of those conceptual images are present, the rest are screenshots.

Easy to read with extremely valuable information not just on Docker but other topics as well.

This is a great book for anyone just wanting to get started with containerization. Starts off with the basics of installing on three different platforms - Linux, Mac and Windows. In addition, it also provides great information on getting started with Amazon Web Services. To no fault of the author or publisher, I gave only four stars because it was a bit behind; however, you have to take into account the speed at which this technology is advancing. One thing I really liked is the book goes into reverse proxy and provides to different implementations - HAProxy and nginx.

Useful tutorials on Docker and related tools

This book is short, and though very useful, doesn't have the best ramp-up into Docker of the books out there. It's great if you come into it already established in dev-ops and have an intermediate level skill set in server administration and network maintenance, but not the best starter for you if not. I think its fair to dock it a little on that shortcoming because neither the packt-pub official page, the book's preface, and first chapter outline the prerequisite skill set of the intended reader. Because it's marked as a "Learning" level of difficulty and because the "who this is for" is very brief and mentions only a generally interested reader (the preface appends on "developers" as the target audience, even though the book is full of mostly wordpress related docker examples), a developer without any server/networking administration background (or one that is 10+ years old), will find themselves referring to external sources to fill in the knowledge gaps needed to approach this "Learning" level book. That was the only thing keeping it five-star worthy, in my opinion, as the book was still excellent.

The author outlines several tutorials for getting yourself set up with these technologies, and has a coherent tone that's easy to follow. Again, though basic familiarity with dev ops and networking/server administration is assumed, the walk-throughs are great for those of us new to Docker. He covers setups through not only Docker, but Amazon Web Services and publishing to GitHub. I feel this book is very useful because it helps you understand the whole Docker ecosystem and the additional tools that are its dependencies, without assuming prior knowledge. He tours you through basic usage of these tools and some of the most useful command-line switches, and even describes many ancillary software tools and add-ons, helping you to understand how rich the whole ecosystem is.

Overall it was a great read and is full of useful references that I've referred back to several times, as it contains some of the most straightforward walk-throughs of setup and usage of docker-related tools.
