While Jones might be the best, no single statistics book is adequate for all common formulas.

Pharmaceutical Statistics (2008) by David Jones is 586 pages long and printed on high quality semi-glossy paper. The book excels in that it tends to disclose the theory behind the equations, rather than just the equations alone, and in that it provides a representative number of examples for each equation. A particular virtue of David Jones' book is that, in providing an example, it expressly discloses each step or operation that is used to solve the problem. In contrast, some statistics books just present the equations with no examples at all, or with only one example.

In buying this book, I was specifically interested in understanding standard deviations, the Z statistic, the t statistic, p values, confidence intervals, alpha values, hazard ratios, Wilcoxon rank sum test, critical values, sample size and power calculations, hazard ratios, logrank statistics, and survival curves (Kaplan-Meier curves).

In setting out to understand these equations, I also bought and read:
(1) Dawson and Trapp (2004) Basic & Clinical Biostatistics (Lange Series);
(2) Durham and Turner (2008) Introduction to Statistics in Pharmaceutical Clinical Trials;
(3) Kirkwood and Sterne (2003) Medical Statistics; and
(4) Motulsky (1995) Intuitive Biostatistics. In my opinion, Motulsky leaves the reader in a free-fall. On occasion, Motulsky provides some insight or guidance on using the various equations. But I would not recommend that any novice interested in statistics look first to Motulsky.
(5) Bart J. Harvey (2009) Statistics for Medical Writers and Editors. This short book is the best for understanding Standard Deviations. Harvey also has very good introductory material. The book's test questions might seem elementary, but they do establish some subtle but basic concepts. Harvey does not get much beyond SDs, and there is almost nothing about the t test or about p values.
(6) Rosner. Fundamentals of Statistics.

Providing that you have all three of these books -- Jones, Kirkwood, and Lange, it is possible to learn statistics for clinical trials. Jones is good in that it has more examples for solving. But Kirkwood is stronger on formulas for clinical trials.

KAPLAN-MEIER PLOTS. Jones fails to disclose Kaplan-Meier curves. For this topic, I refer the reader to the excellent discussion in Dawson & Turner. Kirkwood (pages 272-286) also discloses survival curves. But Lange (pages 221-244)is by far the best for this topic.

Z STATISTIC CALCULATION SCHEMES. First, plug in the population mean, SD of population, and sample mean, into the equation for Z, and arrive at a value for Z. (pages 102-105). Now, with a value for Z in hand, plug this value of Z into Appendix One (left-most column). When Z is plugged into Appendix One, you arrive at a value for probability (located in an inner column). This propability will be the likelihood of acquiring a value for that particular sample mean. The probability may be high, e.g., 0.80, or it might be low, e.g., 0.01. To repeat, the result is a probability value.

The author then discloses the reverse calculation scheme (pages 107-121). First, choose a probability value, for example, alpha = 0.10. Then, go to Appendix One until you get to a value in a column (an interior column). Then, look leftwards, and let your eyes find a home in the left-most column. At this point, you will find a value for Z. For example, Z = 1.28. Then, plug all the available information into the formula Z = (X - u) / sigma. The result will be a value for X, where X is a value for the sample mean that is taken to be a "critical value" or a "cut-off value." To repeat, the result is a "critical value."

What is confusing is that Jones fails to tell the reader that what is happening on pages 102-105 is a procedure going forwards, and that what is going on in pages 107-121 is the same procedure going backwards. That's all there is to it. What is also confusing is that Jones fails to tell us what to do about Z values that are negative. Appendix One of another book, Durham and Turner, is able to accomodate Z values that are positive, and also Z values that are negative. Even more confusing is that Table One of Jones has a massive error in it (page 556), which takes the form of a dramatic discontinuity in the numbers in the table.

CALCULATING Z. Jones is confusing on pages 87-94, 102-118, when he informs us that:

Z=[(sample mean)-(population mean)]/(SD of population)

This is confusing because another book, Rosner (page 244), informs us that:

Z=[(sample mean)-(population mean)]/[(SD of sample)/(square root of # of samples)]

Fortunately, we have Lange to turn to (pages 85-88 of Lange). Lange tells us that the first formula for Z is used when we are interested in individual observations, but that the second formula for Z is used when we are interested in the mean (and not in individual observations).

FORMULA for CONFIDENCE INTERVAL FOR SMALL SAMPLES. Pages 151-154 of Jones is equivalent to pages 53-55 of Kirkwood, for this simple formula. But Kirkwood's presentation of general information on Confidence Intervals (pages 50-53 of Kirkwood) is far superior to any presentation in Jones on this particular topic. Hence, I would recommend readers consult both Jones and Kirkwood for this formula.

WILCOXON SIGNED-RANK TEST. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test involves a simple transformation that any middle school student can perform, where the result is a T value (this is something separate from the t statistic). Following this simple transformation, the reader plugs the T value into a specialized formula for the Z statistic (pages 307-312 Jones). Jones is careful to provide some theory for the Wilcoxon signed rank test--the theory is that the Wilcoxon signed rank test needs to be used whenever the MEAN is a lot different from the MEDIAN (page 304 Jones) and that the Wilcoxon signed rank test is only used where one subject (given drug A) is compared with the same subject (given drug B or placebo).

For the Wilcoxon signed rank, I find that Jones is better than Lange. In Lange, the text provides an excellent description of how to do the Wilcoxon test, but the answer provided by Lange (-2.42), at least in my hands, should actually be another number (-1.947). Another problem with Lange is that Lange's parameters (mean & SD) shown on page 146 of Lange do not match up with the parameters given in Table 6.5 (page 146). Thus, for the Wilcoxon signed rank test I find Jones to be better than Lange.

SAMPLE SIZE AND POWER CALCULATIONS. Jones discloses sample size and power calculations on pages 172-179. The Jones narrative seems to come to a dead end on page 175, where delta is revealed as equaling 2.5 mL. But according to my calculations, delta should be 1.2 mL (50-48.8=1.2 mL). Lange (page 127) seems to lead to a dead end (since Lange fails to explain where the number -0.84 comes from). Kirkwood (pages 417-418) is the best of the books for sample size calculations, as Kirkwood provides a straightforward formula.

CONFUSING AND INCONSISTENT TERMINOLOGY IN STATISTICS BOOKS. In David Jones' book, the "the t statistic" is called "the t statistic." (page 153). But in Kirkwood, it is nowhere called "the t statistic," and instead it is called by three different terms: "t prime" (page 55), "percentage point of the t distribution with (n-1) degrees of freedom" (page 55), and "the t distribution" (page 55). In yet another book, Lange calls the "t statistic" not by "t statistic," but by the name, "critical value for the t distribution" (page 101 of Lange). Motulsky calls the "t statistic" "t asterisk" (page 41, Motulsky). A way out of this confusion, at least in part, is the fact that there are really TWO DIFFERENT NUMBERS. The first is that the "t statistic" is something calculated from the formula: t = (mean1 minus mean2) / (SD / square root of n) The second is that "critical value of the t statistic" is acquired by plugging two numbers (degrees of freedom, and predetermined probability value) into a table, and here no mathematics is used at all. To repeat, for the second of these TWO DIFFERENT NUMBERS, you do use any formula and no calculations are used.

DISORGANIZATION. A fault with all of the above statistics books is their gross disorganization (though Harvey's book is too small to be disorganized). The reader would have an easier time if the authors would devote one page to disclosing that statistics requires making ones way through this decision tree. There are four yes/no questions in this decision tree. These four yes/no questions are independent of each other:
(1) Are you interested in CI, or are you interested in hypothesis testing?
(2) Is your sample from a large group, e.g., 60 data points or more (then you should use Z statistic) or is your sample a small group, e.g., under 60 data points (then you use t statistic).
(3) Are you comparing one sample mean with a population mean? Or does your comparison involve a "paired measurement," that is, data from a STUDY DRUG GROUP and data from CONTROL GROUP, where you compare [sample mean#1 minus sample mean#2] with [population mean#1 minus population mean#2]?
(4) Does your experimental setup involved a 1-tailed experiment, or does your experimental setup involve a 2-tailed experiment?

Then, there are three additional decisions to make in the decision tree:

FIRST DECISION. If you are working with the t statistic, you can use it to acquire a P value (page 66, Kirkwood) or you can use it for comparing with the "critical value of the t statistic, for use in hypothesis testing (page 63, Kirkwood; page 140-141, Lange). To repeat, once you have a value for the "t statistic," you can use this value for two different purposes: (1) PLUG IT INTO A TABLE TO GET A P VALUE; or (2) COMPARE IT WITH THE CRITICAL VALUE OF THE t STATISTIC TO DO HYPOTHESIS TESTING.

SECOND DECISION. If you are working with the Z statistic, you can use it to acquire a P value (page 92, Jones), or you can use it to do hypothesis testing (pages 157-159 of Jones, page 244 of Rosner, page 141 of Lange). To repeat, once you have a value for the "Z statistic," you can use this value for two different purposes: (1) PLUG IT INTO A TABLE TO GET A P VALUE; or (2) COMPARE IT WITH THE CRITICAL VALUE OF THE NORMAL DISTRIBUTION TO DO HYPOTHESIS TESTING.

THIRD DECISION. If you are working with the Z statistic, you need to decide between two formulas. Z = [X-u]/[SD] (FIRST FORMULA); and Z = [X-u] / [(SD)/(square root of n)] (SECOND FORMULA).

The question is, when do you use the FIRST FORMULA and when do you use the SECOND FORMULA? Kirkwood fails to address this question. But Jones in combination with Lange provides excellent guidance as to when to use the FIRST FORMULA and when to use the SECOND FORMULA. For use of the FIRST FORMULA, see Jones pages 87-89 and Lange page 87. For use of the SECOND FORMULA, see Jones pages 156-159, and Lange pages 85-86. In a nutshell, the FIRST FORMULA is used for comparing data from a mean with a hypothetical value of interest to you (a value that you dreamed up out of thin air). The SECOND FORMULA is used when numbers are available for a Population Mean (and Population SD), and where numbers are available for a Sample Mean, and where your goal is to find probability of a hypothetic sample mean will have a value that is higher than (or lower than) the value of the sample mean. Jones does a better job at distinguishing between the two formulas than does Lange. Jones comes to the rescue!

The above collection of decisions in the decision tree is inherent in all of the statistics books, but the books fail to make explicit (or in an organized manner) the fact that these decisions are waiting for you in the text. In my opinion, there is no excuse for this sort of obscurity that so characterizes statistics books. It does not have to be this way.

The formulas used for clinical statistics have been around for over 100 years. The mathematics used in these books is on the level of a college freshman. Why is it that the presentation of statistics in all of these books is so disorganized, disjointed, and sporadic? These formulas are not rocket science. There is no excuse for generally uneven quality of the available statistics books.

Loved the set but be aware of material box is made of.

Love the books and the concept of boxed set however the box is made of a linen type of material and the tags on the box tore the material when taking them off and one corner was damaged when we received it. Just a little disappointing .

About the Author
Bill Menzies is widely known in Pentecostal and evangelical circles as a statesman, building bridges across denominational and racial divides. He was one of the organizers of the Society for Pentecostal Studies and was the first editor of the society's journal, Pneuma. He was also one of the editors for the Full Life Study Bible and a consulting editor for Christianity Today. He held teaching and administrative positions at Central Bible College (Springfield, Missouri), Evangel University (Springfield, Missouri), the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (Springfield, Missouri), California Theological Seminary (Fresno, California) and Asia Pacific Theological Seminary (Baguio City, Philippines). Menzies' dissertation at the University of Iowa became the benchmark history of the Assemblies of God, Anointed to Serve (GPH, 1971). He was a prolific author, authoring or editing standard textbooks such as Understanding the Times of Christ (GPH, 1969), Bible Doctrines: A Pentecostal Perspective (GPH, 1993) and Spirit and Power (Zondervan, 2000).

A Concise Pentecostal Theology

Contained within this well organized volume is the core of Pentecostal theology and a must read for anyone who seeks to better understand pentecostalism. Each of the sixteen doctrines, supported sufficiently with scripture, is presented within a theological framework . An example of such a framework, for the doctrine The One True God, would be the classical arguements given since medieval days for the existence of God (chapter 2). A nice plus is found at the end of each chapter where the authors have provided study questions to help insure the reader's comprehension of the material. Menzies and Horton have created a work that serves two purposes: first, as a resource for general theological knowledge; and, second, as a specific doctrinal reference for the Assemblies of God. Thus "Bible Doctrines - A Pentecostal Perspective" is an excellent addition to the library of the serious Bible student.

Brief Introduction to the Assemblies of God Doctrines

The Assemblies of God is the world's largest classical Pentecostal denomination in the world with over 40 million members worldwide. It is also the largest missionary movement in history of humanity.
However, all of this has evolved from the Assemblies of God Statement of Fundamental Truths written in 1914 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This short volume covers those sixteen truths. Each truth is covered in only 4 to 5 pages. But don't let that stop you from reading this book for a brief introduction to the Pentecostal teachings.
Finally, one word about the "saint" and his comments about the Holy Ghost and the Assemblies of God. The Assemblies of God is not a holiness-Pentecostal movement but grew out of mainly ministers from the Baptist, Presbyterian, and Christian & Missionary Alliance churches. The Assemblies of God stance on entire sanctification is one of progressive sanctification from their Baptistic roots. In fact, the only real differences between Southern Baptist and the Assemblies of God is their view on Spirit-Baptism and eternal security. The Assemblies of God is Arminian in its theology but not Wesleyan in many other points of doctrine.

Useful for ministers and laypeople

There are not many books that I read and reread nor reread a third time. However, Bible Doctrines by William Menzies is one of those books. No, it's not necessarily because it contains a riveting story or dialogue. In fact, it can be somewhat theologically dense; but, the book is invaluable. I first read through this book in Bible college as a syllabus requirement. Okay. Fine. I'll read it. I read it through a second time as a prepared for my licensing in the Assemblies of God. I absorbed it more. I understood its importance. I recently completed my third reading as I prepare for ordination. And, honestly, it is exciting. Yes, it's theology and doctrine, but it's founded in Scripture. It offers a concise understanding of the Pentecostal experience.

Throughout the book, Menzies walks us through the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God and offers a more in-depth study as the chapter continues. By the end of the book, you will have a firmer understanding on theological topics such as the authoritative rule, the One True God, the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, the fall of man, the salvation of man, the ordinances of the Church, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, the initial physical evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit, sanctification, the Church and its mission, the ministry, divine healing, the blessed hope, the millennial reign of Christ, the final judgment, and the new heavens and the new earth. You might be exhausted just reading the list, and, yet, Menzies takes these theological issues and breaks them into chewable portions. At the conclusion of the book, a glossary and index are also provided for easier study. I can't recommend this book enough. If you are studying for the ministry, you have to get this. If you are a layperson searching out more information on the Pentecostal perspective, this is the book to pick up.

a mind boggling tale on multiple levels

While I have read periodic newspaper accounts of the lives of workers in Chinese factories that produce clothing, fashion accessories, sporting goods and electronics for Western and Japanese consumer markets, NONE gets as deep and complex as this book by a Chinese American journalist for the Wall Street Journal. Ms. Chang also weaves her personal family story into her reportage, and Factory Girls chronicles the author's coming to terms with her family legacy and the huge socio-economic and political changes in China over the past 75 years.

As the book reached its final chapters, I was surprised at the author's audacity in letting the serious flaws in contemporary Chinese capitalist culture (Yes, I said capitalist) rise to the surface, alarming this reader. Yes, a new individualism is being born and hopefully will help loosen the shackles of millennia of sexism, patriarchy and groupthink, but the moral moorings needed in this transition have not appeared. People routinely lie about everything, and relationships among young men and women are unstable, fugitive and exploitive. The deep meaning and life orientation that comes with submitting to religious disciplines is absent; instead legions of young people are suckered into pyramid schemes, business scams and empty self-improvement programs -- many of them adapted from American self-help gurus. Quacks and hucksters abound. Life seems transitory and superficial. Markets are laced with bribery and substandard workmanship; regulating bureaucracies are corrupt and ineffective. And we all know of China's manifold copyright violations.

If there is another book on contemporary Chinese society as personal and analytical as Factory Girls, as well as written for a general audience, I am not aware of it. For me, the book is also a cautionary tale against the rising and uncritical free-market "faith" that has come to dominate the Republican Party in the Bush years and beyond. I wonder if China is courting a radical overcorrection of its social dysfunctions in the future -- bringing another set of problems in its wake.

I read Factory Girls via audiobook and it is well-voiced.

Couldn't put it down!

Paradigm Wars is an amazing book that is not for the fainthearted or closedminded. You will not pick it up, read it through in a few sittings and feel as though you have gotten all you want. You will go back again and again. For example, imagine what a chapter entitled "Galactic Destiny" might contain that could stretch your imagination and blow your mind.
Mark Woodhouse has managed to produce a work that exists somewhere between academic and pop genres, which provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of major topics of the New Age in an extremely readable style. Each chapter can actually stand alone as an individual book, if one were so inclined, and this reader was delighted to see the length and depth of the topics. If that were not enough, there are 35 pages of footnotes as a junping off place for further investigation.
With over thirty years of academic achievement, Dr. Woohouse has the credentials to be taken very seriously in an arena that is so often misrepresented and misunderstood. As a philosopher he presents divergent points of view and then presents his own conclusions. Readers may agree or not. That's not the point. Presenting current thinking is what he has done so well. That the paradigm amy change tomorrow is not only probable but expected.
This reader, for one, is looking forward to a sequel and, in the meantime, sharing Paradigm Wars with people I am guesing are ready for it. Not everyone is.

Disappointing and Overly Optimistic

Well, I'd love to read a good book by that title and one might even copy the blurb texts and the table of contets of Woodhouse's book - all its weaknesses are in the fine print, so to say. The paradigm wars the title refers to are meant to take place between "traditional" (mechanistic, etc.) science and "new age" (holistic, etc.) world views, which present levels of complexity not available to the traditional approaches. No doubt such a war takes place presently... (1) It's an obvious problem that the "new" paradigm is conceptualized as being open and unfinished - together with the author's desire to appropriate all nice and interesting recent scientific developments for his side, one may at times wonder what the "new paradigm" is and what limits it necessarily must have. (2) Woodhouse limits is attention more or less to academic debate - but that's not primarily where the wars are being fought. (Does he think it really matters? The climate in academic institutions may depend on quite a number of factors beside rational arguments...) The bullets fly right in our everyday life situatios - when we see our physician and argue about a treatment (which may or may not be paid by health insurance depending on the influence that "traditional scientists" (aka drug manufacturers and their lackeys) have on the insurance firm). It also takes place in firms striving for enhanced effectiveness in the form of the question "will it be possible to make our employees work harder - or should we consider something new altogether?". And it takes many more forms one does not even find mentioned in this book. (3) On the fronts of these wars I know, the situation looks rather bleak for new approaches. traditional doctrines are well entrenched and have lots of powerful allies - economic shorttermism advocating "tried and true" measures, traditional health providers, genetic engineering firms, religious institutions producing cult scares from time to time, etc. If you advocate divergent paradigms, you need a lot of patience - and you're also faced with some serious problems Woodhouse does not mention. Let me point here only to the fact that while publicly recognized "sciences" have something like a memory in terms of libraries and institutional continuity, "new age thought" all to often starts all over again, repeats its standard arguments and, in sum, doesn't get anywhere for lack of such a continuity, for lack of references one could build on. Altogether, I'm sorry for the money and for the time I spent on this book. Still, someone should write a better one... - it's a worthy project, just a faulty implementation.

Excellent book for content and resources

This is a book that will inspire a paradigm shift in your own thinking. I discovered this book while conducting a recent search for academic works in the field of the philosophy of parapsychology. I've read each of the recent (past 20 years or so) books in this genre and this one is the best by far. It is thorough, comprehensive, interesting to say the least, and well written. This is now the book I recommend to friends and acquaintances more than any other.

If a book is judged by the impact it has on the way you view and understand the world and thus the impact it has on your life, it's the best book I've read since Plato's 'Republic' and Raymond Moody's 'Life After Life' in college.
Let me put it this way; for the week after I bought it I literally could not put it down except for obligatory commitments and for sleeping. I even continued reading while eating my meals!
In short, buy it, read it and I promise you it will be the best money you've ever spent to expand your horizons.

About the Author
Alan Weber is President of Marketing Analytics Group LLC, a provider of database marketing consulting and modeling services. Mr. Weber is President of the University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC) Alumni Association, Past President of the Henry W. Bloch School Alumni Advisory Committee, and is a past President of the Kansas City Direct Marketing Association (KCDMA.) He is the 2004 KCDMA Direct Marketer of the Year. Mr. Weber is co-author of, Desktop Database Marketing, along with Jack Schmid, published by NTC Business Books in 1998. Prior to founding his own consulting group, he was Vice President, Database Marketing for J. Schmid & Associates. Mr. Weber earned an MBA from the Bloch School of Business at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, with an emphasis in Direct Marketing. He also earned a Professional Certificate in Nonprofit Fund Raising through the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership at the Bloch School of Public Administration. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Management from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University. Mr. Weber is currently has a patent-pending for his new methodology for improving list segmentation for the performing arts. Mr. Weber is on the faculty of the Integrated Marketing Program at Kansas University. He has lectured at other universities including UMKC, Central Missouri State University (CMSU), and New York University (NYU.) His articles have been published in various magazines, including Target Marketing, DM News, Direct Marketing to Business Report, Operations and Fulfillment, Catalog Age, Ingram's and SEMA News. He has trained direct marketers across North America, in England, Mexico, and South America.

"John Goodman" and "John C. Trewolla" only have one review apiece, and it is for this book, and they are both from 'Kansas City' and they both give the book '5 stars' - evidently the author does know something about marketing ;)

Database marketing practically clarified

Actually, anyone with an intense interest in business could derive concrete information from this book, which comes with a CD of support material drawn from Weber's clients.

Immediately useful ideas!

I knew we needed to change our marketing strategy because the "same old same old" was just not working any more -- but this book showed me HOW to decide which changes were going to be profitable. It is readable, understandable and even occasionally entertaining and is consistently interesting. It's completely practical, too -- which means we can actually use the information it presents.
