The other reviews for this are for the old edition and not the Brief Introduction to Education, so please be aware that the date of the reviews is before this text was published.

In reading the other reviews, it was obvious that the reviewers missed the point of the text--it is to be used in an introductory course, not in a course where preservice or practicing teachers would be designing lessons and units.

This text provides a great overview of the educational issues and problems that someone contemplating becoming a teacher needs to know about before investing time, energy, and money into obtaining certification. The brief version is much better, more up-to-date and student friendly than the original text by Sadker and Sadker.

For anyone contemplating being a teacher, the issues presented in this text may help you decide if you really have what it takes to be a classroom teacher. It gives an overview of the political, economic, and social issues facing educators as well as the historic perspective of American Education.

Well worth the cost.

We are being taught opinions from bigots

This textbook is filled with the authors biased opinions and lacking anything of any real educational value. I don't like being taught from biased sources, whether they be liberal or conservative. Plenty of times I had to stop reading because I became so frustrated by the authors bigotry. I hope teachers will not use this for their class. I have not learned anything of value from this book about the subject I was taking, but I did learn to be on the lookout for people like Sadker who want to convey bigotry in a college setting. I really felt like I wasted my time and money, but fortunately I was able to sell the book back for close to what I paid for it. I can't believe this passes as a college textbook.

This book was used for my freshman Foundations of Education course. I found the book a joy to read, and it provided a balanced look at the teaching profession. This one book that will definantly not be sold back. The supplemental materials on the CD-ROM seemed to be high quality, but I disliked having to read them on my computer and ended up ignoring the CD.

Excellent Biography of a Runaway Girl

Exceptionally well written. Her overall story is compelling, with descriptions of the events and situations she lived that ring true. Rather than overstating and embellishing the truth for dramatic effect, Carissa's story of hope and possibility rings true and accurate. It is refreshing to hear her biography, including a childhood with some crappy circumstances, told without the sense of self-pity, victim-hood and entitlement that is so prevalent today. She has risen above the abuse she endured.
This book opens the door for people from all walks of life to partially understand life on the streets in America, but also may be especially helpful for at-risk youth who are flirting with dangerous forces such as substance abuse and human trafficking.

Slow to start, slow to finish. The majority was good. One of my issues is that I think she left a lot out of the book as to growing up in a "troubled home" and being abused. The way it appears is that her stepfather threw her out of the front door while she was in second grade. Then, she ran away at the age of 12 because she got grounded and her siblings picked on her. That happens to the majority of us, so I guess I don't understand what was so bad that she went through what she did. I needed more background. And I'd like to know where she got the money for all of her schooling. It was well written, with less than a handful of typos. I would recommend reading it.

This is for my class and our class is learning a lot from the reading material. We often have to do discussions on what we read or what the professor has planned which is based off some reading in this book.

Everything I need in one text!

This book has everything I need to teach my basic writing course. It has relevant themes, interesting readings, writing suggestions, and excercises for editing. I have been using this text for a almost a year now, and all of my classes have enjoyed it very much, both in the classroom, and in my online courses. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who likes to focus on reading and the writing process in a college composition classroom!

A very poor quality textbook

I teach at a two-year college and we adopted this textbook for spring 2009. It has turned out to be a real disappointment.

I see three major problems with it. First, it uses many terms it never defines, such as "purpose," "audience," "thesis," "symbolize," et cetera. Definitions for these terms vary, and they also need to be defined as a set, consistently with one another. So telling students to look them up in a dictionary is not adequate. In addition, many of the definitions the book _does_ give are unclear.

Second, the anthologized essays vary greatly in difficulty, and a number of them are far too hard for two-year college students (although they are the stated audience for the book). A reading called "Pomegranates and English Education" uses feminist and anti-colonialist terminology that would puzzle many Ivy League freshmen. Another by Natalie Angier (a writer I admire) introduces terms from evolutionary biology which neither students nor instructors are likely to understand even with the help of a dictionary. Furthermore, the discussion questions after the readings are often either vague or far too leading.

Third, the book seems to have been a rush job. There are misspellings, omitted words, and a rather appalling instance where "flat-chested" is hyphenated as "flatch-ested."

Two-year college students, whose skills are already often not the strongest, really deserve better.

About the Author
I grew up in Scotland, but after I met my Dutch husband in America we decided to move to New Zealand and that's where we've settled. We bought a patch of land that we've filled with other people's unwanted animals - we didn't advertise for them, they found us! So far we have three miniature horses (we took in two and were surprised 11 months later when a third appeared - yep, we know nothing about horses!), three anti-social alpacas, a grumpy cow, one pet sheep who wants to live in the house, a crazy goat who keeps eating my manuscripts and an escape artist chicken who breaks into our house through the cat flap. And that's just the pets who live outside the house - don't even get me started on the demented, farting dog who keeps burying my shoes! On top of this I have two small girls, one DIY obsessed husband (I said "obsessed" not "skilled") and a 92 year old neighbor who thinks she lives with us.

I'm quickly becoming a big fan of Janet Elizabeth Henderson. I discovered her great writing when I bought a book suggested by a Goodreads ad: Lingerie Wars. Lingerie Wars is hilarious, and if you have yet to read it, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy.

I liked Lingerie Wars only a hair more than Goody Two Shoes, but Goody Two Shoes is a great book in its own right.

GTS is about Caroline, a Scottish control freak librarian who thinks she is doomed to live a romance-free life. Her practicality can get in the way of her relationships, but when she meets her match, Josh--who is a famous singer from the U.S.--she isn't prepared for the battle ahead.

When they make a business arrangement to get married, sure it seems a little weird at first, but they are both getting something out of it. So what's to go wrong, right?

Probably just about everything. Josh has a lot of patience and tolerance for his new controlling fiance, and Caroline can't believe Josh has the nerve to order her around--or simply ignore her orders.

Some old characters from Lingerie Wars make a fun return--Betty, the 80-something gossipy and bossy hen. Lake Benson, the hot ex-military Englishman. Ex-lingerie-model Kirsty Campbell, Lake's fiance and Caroline's best friend (one of the MCs of Lingerie Wars). And of course Dougal, the unofficial mayor of Invertary.

As the new couple deal with the complications of fame and fortune, each one learns something about the other and assumptions take a back seat.

I love the way Ms. Henderson's writing makes the story an easy read--which is hard to do. And I love the funny moments throughout, with just the right amount of sexy added in. The characters are great and well-developed, and I found myself rooting for Caroline and Josh.

What it boils down to is this: I loved this book and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a romcom read with sexy tension. Also, I can't wait for book three in this series!

I was given this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Oh my gosh, I'm so obsessed with Inventary.

I thought Lingerie Wars was funny and loved it, so I was very excited for book 2. It did not disappoint.
I just could not stop laughing.

I am totally fangirling over Ms. Janet's writing style. I don't generally read romantic comedies, but her books are hilarious.

This is book 2 in the series. It wasn’t as good as book 1 “Lingerie Wars” but I still liked it. What I like about the author is fun and different personalities which provide natural humor and conflict as they interact.

Toward the end I was a little tired of Caroline putting herself down and thinking she wasn’t good enough for him. But I was still ok with the story.

Josh was a famous singer and didn’t want to choose a wife from the fans and surgery enhanced women who surrounded him. He asked his friend and business manager Mitch to find him a wife. The author didn’t “show” how Mitch or someone found Caroline. I did not like that - I wanted to know. The story begins with Josh showing up in Invertary and telling Caroline that he wants to marry her. From the beginning and during all of the book Josh appears to really like and desire her. I did not understand that. I wanted to be inside Josh to see what he liked about her and why.

THE SERIES:
Book 6 will be published in 2016. Each book is a stand alone romance about people living in the small town of Invertary in the northern Scotland Highlands. Main characters in one book have small roles in other books. My ratings are:

About the Author
Srini Pillay, M.D. is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. After graduating as the top medical student, he was the top award winner at Harvard during his residency and one of the top three award winners during his psychiatry residency in the US. He then directed the Outpatient Anxiety Disorders Program at McLean Hospital-Harvard’s largest psychiatric hospital and also completed 17 years of nationally funded brain imaging research. His first book, “Life Unlocked: 7 Revolutionary Lessons to Overcome Fear” (Rodale, August 2010) was voted one of five finalists in “Books for a Better Life” in the motivational category. In addition, his next book: “Your Brain and Business: The Neuroscience of Great Leaders” was peer-reviewed by Wharton Business School and is scheduled to be released in March of 2011. Einstein said many quotable observations but the two that are most relevant to this outstanding book are:
"Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler"
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex... It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction"

After reading Pillay's "Your Brain and Business" I was attracted to "The Science Behind the Law of Attraction". I have been studying success literature for over twenty years and only recently did the relatively new discovery of brain plasticity allow me to put it all together.

Pillay is spot on point with his laser focus of what may appear to be disarmingly simple. Don't let that fool you. "The Science Behind the Law of Attraction" is what the "Secret" and even "Think and Grow Rich" and the other great success literature are trying to tell us without knowing the science behind it. Pillay knows the science and shares it with us all. Read it thoughtfully, follow the directions and you will begin to attract what you want

Don't do it.

I was expecting quiet a different thing here. What this book is: a workbook. Since I already know how to use the magnetic attraction the workbook is useless to me. I had hoped for some ACTUAL scientific explanations. Unfortunately, if you are familiar with the concept you already know what this book is about and if you are not already familiar with the concept this book is useless. I am donating it to the local library.

Flow cytometric analysis of molecular, biochemical, genetic and developmental parameters using cellular fluorescence techniques as well as fluorescence-activated (FACS) or magnetic (MACS) cell sorting technologies provide unique options for molecular and cellular biology. In recent years, these technologies have been considerably advanced.
In this second edition, all chapters have been updated according to the recent improvements and modifications. Further, new protocols have been added, such as on magnetic selection, magnetofluorescent liposomes, the cytometry of secreted products and microbead assays, as well as reporter gene assays for cytometry and cell selection. The recent technical developments allow diagnostic differentiation of cells according to specific gene expression, identification of rare disease-associated cells and isolation of well-defined cells at high purity for cell therapies. In basic research, analysis and isolation of cells according to the correlated expression of up to 10 gene products, expressed within, on or around the cell have become possible.

A book for the beginner and a review for the experienced

This is the first book I purchased for flow cytometry after checking out 3 unsatisfactory books on the same subject from the library. I am a clinician by training and so I needed a book that explains the basic background of the method, PLUS detailed procedures to follow, and explanation on how to alter those procedures to suit one's experiment. This book is written and presented in a way that makes it easy to understand even if one has no prior trianing in flow-cytometry. It does not have so much technical jargon that a newbie would not be able to understand. Everything is clear and well-explained. I have "debugged" some of my current procedures using this book. Chapter 3 (Immunofluroescence: Basic Considerations) is a must-read: the validity of one's results seem to largely depend on factors discussed in this chapter. Included also is a list of internet resouce for cytometry, although some of websites have been outdated. Overall a very nice reference, but as in all lab procedures-related books, one book never covers everything you need to know, so I use this book by Radbruch in conjuction with others.
