I got this book because I have to teach from it this semester. I love it. Clear, concise, with good examples. Makes argument easier (I never understood Toulmin's schema or deductive syllogism form as well before) and makes editing easy to teach. Great.

About the Author
Carson McCullers (1917-1967) was the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, The Member of the Wedding, Reflections in a Golden Eye, and Clock Without Hands. Born in Columbus, Georgia, on February 19, 1917, she became a promising pianist and enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York when she was seventeen, but lacking money for tuition, she never attended classes. Instead she studied writing at Columbia University, which ultimately led to The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, the novel that made her an overnight literary sensation. On September 29, 1967, at age fifty, she died in Nyack, New York, where she is buried.

Gifted

I bought this book to give me an understanding of where she started from and also how she developed the deaf character in the book The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. I am really glad I did. It made me see that she was gifted but also that she kept at it. She didn't stop and she wrote short stories that I think were the building blocks to her writing novels.

I enjoyed learning about her and the critique of her teachers.

Mortgaged Heart is yet another example of Carson McCullers theme of spiritual isolation. You can feel the pain of each character. If you like McCullers as much as I do this is a great one.

About the Author
Barnett-Emeritus, Merritt College

Raymond A. Barnett, a native of California, received his B.A. in mathematical statistics from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. in mathematics from the University of Southern California. He has been a member of the Merritt College Mathematics Department, and was chairman of the department for four years. Raymond Barnett has authored or co-authored eighteen textbooks in mathematics, most of which are still in use. In addition to international English editions, a number of books have been translated into Spanish. Co-authors include Michael Ziegler, Marquette University; Thomas Kearns, Northern University; Charles Burke, City College of San Francisco; John Fuji, Merritt College; and Karl Byleen, Marquette University. Michael R. Ziegler received his B.S. from Shippensburg StateCollege and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Delaware. After completing post doctoral work at the University of Kentucky, he was appointed to the faculty of Marquette University where he currently holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Dr. Ziegler has published over a dozen research articles in complex analysis and has co-authored eleven undergraduate mathematics textbooks with Raymond A. Barnett, and more recently, Karl E. Byleen. Karl E. Byleen received the B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Nebraska. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science of Marquette University. This book may be expensive but is really helpful, not only in class but also as a reference or as a study guide. The language used in this book is simple and the graphics and images easy to understand. For me trigonometry was always a pain and I got an A in the class, so I decided to write a review for future students.

This book was not written by Perl programmers

A Perl novice picking this book up will be impressed. It's big, the prose is good, and it seems to have a command of the subject.

This is all misleading. The book was written by professional authors who pick up a language as they write a book. Perl isn't like other langauges - the mindset and featureset are completely different. Writing effective Perl means getting a grasp on ideas taken from awk, sed, Lisp, C++, sh, and a dozen other places. This book teaches Perl as if it were another C dielect with a funny syntax. This certainly makes it easy to "leaern Perl", but after reading over 800 pages, you'll actually learn very little Perl. And no wonder - large amounts of this book were cut and paste verbatum from other books Dietel wrote about C++ and Visual Basic! Nothing unique to Perl is discussed, such as Perl's excellent date manipulation fascilities, object serialization, or indeed any module beyond the CGI module (on which a thousand books have been written).

Descriptions of features are vague and half hearted showing lack of a clear understanding. To someone who knows Perl, this book sounds like a homework assignment where someone read about Perl and then wrote about their findings, uncertainties and all.

Throughout the book, code listings basically work (I worked hard on that as a paid technical reviewer - my name is in the credits - and this was no small task) but they too completely miss the style, spirit, and indeed the point of programming Perl. They're riddled with security holes. They don't leverage modules, and Perl's CPAN repository is probably it's greatest strength.

I don't like writing bad reviews. I don't like having failed to have persuaded the authors to address security. I wanted to like this book since it was the first I've worked on. With lots of help from people who truly grasp Perl this book could have been medicore but Dietel's production-line like business model doesn't allow for this. Books need to be written by experts or at least senior members of the community. Rank novices cannot just read other books and repeat back their findings and call it a book. Or perhaps you honestly believe that Dietel has mastered every language on the sun and had plenty of time left over to write an 800 page book about the language they learned last month.

As with any bad review, you should be asking what motivated the bad review. Often it's a frustrated novice. Sometimes it's pure snobbery. Other times it's religion or a burnt employee. I'm not a Perl novice; I've been programming for 21 years now and I've been programming in Perl quite heavily for about 6 of those. I'm a bit of a Perl snob but only because there are so many really excellent books like Programming Perl, Learning Perl, Beginning Perl, CGI Programming with Perl, and scores of others. Dietel treated me very well and paid me fairly (again, I wish I could give an average review). I'm just writing this review to temper the initial impressions of those first learning Perl with a slightly more educated assessment.

If you want one massive book with loads and loads of Perl knowledge, Computer Science & Perl Programming was collectively written by about 20 of the best known Perl hackers who have developed the most important modules, worked on the core, and spoke and written more often than anyone else. And while CS&PP has nearly the same page count, it costs half as much. Besides being more thorough, more insightful, more interesting, and in better style, it's a heck of a lot of fun.

In short, Perl: How to Program is just another in-it-for-the-money amaturely written Perl+CGI book with a lot of padding and little insight.

FOR THE SERIOUS STUDENT

Make no mistake, you are buying more than a book; this is a university COURSE in programming Perl. First, the peeves...
Start with its price--$$$--grrr! No solutions are to be had for the exercises??? The CD is really mickey-mouse. Think about it...this book is written by "Educators" on "computer programming" and the CD is little more than 1st generation "acceptable"?! If anyone could and should do better...?
Right. Now the good points. Super organized...logically arranged, easy to find info as a reference. Each chapter tells you what you will learn, provides terminology to learn, and the obligatory quizzes at the end of the chapter reinforces what you just covered...all the pros of a good university text! The page layout--font, colors, etc., are all utilized with great effectiveness.
The language of the text is closer to a 2nd or 3rd year text. You are definitely not talked down to. I found the language to be in the upper level of my comfort zone. I had to slow down and think. What makes it acceptable as an introductory text is that the authors are very precise and clear with their terminology/definitions. It's all there in black and white but if you didn't catch definition A the way THEY defined it, definition B will bring you back. It can be rather slow moving at times, albeit complete.
To be sure, more information couldn't be supplied in a text this size without a shoehorn. It is as complete and thorough as anyone could hope. The teaching method is to show a morsel of programming which you then learn by dissecting for understanding. The code works. It all works. Unfortunately you aren't given much opportunity to implement what you have learned outside of playing with the illustrated code (since the exercises have no solutions). I only studied up to chapter 15/23 (databases) and picked what I needed from the rest. [I needed to rewrite a program from Perl to another language]
This book is definitely NOT FOR EVERYONE! The bottom line you must accept is that you STUDY it! If you just want to get aquainted with Perl code--perhaps be able to read and understand it, do yourself a favor, try another book--there are scads of em out there. There is nothing casual about this book but if you are willing to put in the time, it will reward you. I believe this book will become a reference book for me as well, without having to buy another.
The authors have written other "programming language" books with the same Formula--I'm currently waiting for the PYTHON release. I only hope it lives up to this one.
Overall an impressive text, but only for the SERIOUS student!

Finally, a true all in one resource for Perl programmers

Do you want to write Perl? Interface cgi with databases? Understand regular expressions? Maybe there is some basic question that you KNOW you should KNOW but even after perldoc and RTFM has failed you you were too ashamed to ask someone? After you read this, it won't leave the bag you take with you to work everyday.
This book is clearly the very best Perl reference I have come across.

My main problem before was with wrapping my head around Statistical Model building, but now I'm much more confident in Statistic Model Building and Logistic Regression - which is well covered in the testbank. Very good starters book

Really great book, although it is unfortunate that in it Noel refers to another of his books called more money with noel Whittaker, which is unavailable. I emailed Noel and he said that they may do another run of that book next year in 2014.

Making Money Made Simple comes a distant 2nd place only to God's Word the Bible in terms of practical specific attitudes and practices to help everybody (especially parents) help themselves and their children, get a leg up financially early on and continue the cumulative positive effects for the rest of their lives. This book should be a prescribed text in parenting classes and many of the principles should be a part of the curriculum in early childhood education, tailored for children's ages and backgrounds with opportunity for those who want more advanced help to be able to access it according to interest. Much of the world's economic problems could be alleviated if individuals from an early age, and governments, could be inspired to embrace the principles and practices explained in this book.

I discovered this book on a friend's bookshelf and have found it immediately usable to save and make money where I live in New Zealand. Better from a practical standpoint to make a financial difference sooner and for the rest of life than any of the other books in this vein I've read. They are all great books too.

There's a reason Noel Whittaker is the face of finance in Australia. I first read this book 15 years ago, but wanted to re-read the 25th anniversary edition. Wow - still as enjoyable and useful as the first time. It's been updated to include changes in the last few years, meaning Noel is obviously still passionate about what he does. One of my friends used to work with Noel, and apparently he spends between 2-3 hours each day just helping people via email with their financial concerns completely free of charge. Motivation and financial info by the bucketload in this book. Highly recommended!

Great Information - Bad Abbreviations

Michael Reynolds is a good author, but this book uses a lot of "Americanized" abbreviations and references that drives you crazy after a while. Example: instead of using the correct "3. Company, III.(gep.) SS-PzGr Regiment 'Deutschland' was involved in heavy fighting...", he will say something like "The third company of the 3rd Armoured SS Panzer Grenadiers were in involved in heavy fighting..."
He also does not use proper Waffen-SS ranks, instead choosing to represent them in their American equivalents for us "American Readers". I get how that might seem like a good idea for the "general public", but the types of people who buy SS history books will most likely know the basic Waffen-SS ranks.

It makes things extremely uncomfortable and difficult to understand after a while. I keep asking myself "Whose '1st SS Panzer Grenadiers' is her referring to? Siebken, Hansen, or Sandig's Kampfgruppe? Apparently, they ALL have their own "1st SS Panzer Grenadiers".

That said, I really like that Reynolds is unbiased in his writings and gives a fair perspective of both sides.
He also pays remarkable attention to detail regarding the events of the battles. But honestly, I just don't care enough about the Battle of the Bulge to want to know if Joachim Peiper had a cigarette at 4:39am on December 18th in La Gleize. I would like to know more about the German psyche, the types of units involved, some personal accounts from the Waffen-SS, etc. (similar to Hubert Meyer's The 12th SS" volumes)

Please use proper German abbreviations for German units in your next work!

Fast paced

Written by someone who is clearly interested in the subject, one who benefited from being at the right time and place to interview the survivors still alive at the time. Nicely documents the military activities of the 1st SS Panzer Corps fighting in the last months of the war, it does help fill a gap for English language readers. Nice maps. Warning: the author uses a lot of place names and you will need to refer to the maps, as well as finding yourself having to look back over pages to remember who a certain person was. Another big plus is the author is great at giving you background and then moving on, and there is not a lot of editorializing. Worth the money if you are interested in World War Two, especially the European Theater or Eastern Front.

Michael Reynolds books dealing with well known Waffen SS formations are both informative and terrific reads for students of World War 2 history, particularly as they deal with the struggles of these groups on the eastern front. He manages to separate the military from the political very effectively, always taking the perspective of the soldier. Aside from the horrors of the Nazi regime, particularly in the east, and the involvement of some of these men in them, the majority fought like the Spartans of modern times, and their stamina, resilience and capabilities won the respect of many of their opponents. This book, along with its companion volumes most certainly belongs in the library of anyone interested in these times and events.
