Love this book!

Goodrick's book is as informative as it is entertaining, an atypical method book. He does a wonderful job of describing the feel and techniques used in improvisation, and he does this with sincerity - no patronizing or controlling. The outlines of 1-2 string improvisation really are the key to truly integrating scales fluency and fretboard knowledge The section on tempi changed the way I approach music. This is a great book and I highly recommend it to guitarists who wish to understand music and the guitar better.

Radical in its possibilities both then and now

If Leopardi's Zibaldone was the publishing event of this year, then this first English translation of Bernardim Ribeiro's seminal Portuguese classic in 400 years must have been the event of 2012. I finally got around to reading it and found that its deceptively simple chivalric contents belie the confounding and even bewildering effect of it all. Though capably enough described as "the first Iberian pastoral romance" that doesn't begin to capture the strangeness and remoteness of the text, a synthesis of so many genres then existing independently. It lingers in the mind in part because it's "ahead of its time" in respect to its treatment of psychology and gender and its overall metaphysical density, in some ways I think forging new terrain that does register as recognizably "modern" (the story within a story format leads to a kind of coiled rabbit hole of inescapable reflections). Also, of course, there is the inevitable sense of cultural remove in the emphasis on obscure, but highly developed notions of chivalric love; these will seem remote or foreign to many of us, especially in terms of their often directly unacknowledged but always present implications, circulating through and enriching the entire text in ineffable ways. But I also think that the literary structure and form of the book, in combination with all of the above, really does develop wholly new avenues for thought. It may bear a superficial resemblance to One Thousand and One Nights, The Decameron or The Canterbury Tales but this is a unique sui generis work all its own, breaking ground and pointing the way both for ideas and literary possibilities in the years to come.

I want a Gabriel!!

What can I say? Gabriel’s Treasure is a journey about the possibility of losing the most important person in your world. It’s a story of strength, love, and faith. About how a big Alpha male can be brought to his knees by this love. This is definitely a must read and be ready for an emotional read!

Gabriel and Fern had been a couple since high school and were hopelessly in love with each other. Happy, in love and then their world was turned upside down. Fern was diagnosed with cancer and was having to undergo chemo therapy

Most of us really don’t get the whole picture of how being treatment for cancer impacts the lives of those going through it. Their fears and how family and friends are sometimes the only link to the world outside of the confines of the hospital room and feeling of living a complete life
Throughout this book Gabriel was truly Fern’s lifeline.
He was so loving and took such good care of her and her needs. All alpha tendencies put aside to show her the gentleness she needed but there as a support to help her make decisions. He was always there to reinforcing any doubts that would cloud her thoughts. Their strong MC family always stepped up to the task at hand, no matter what the need, no questions asked. It was really cool to see how the MC was shown as such a strong family unit too.

A heartfelt and emotional read but so good!!

Amazing story about love, family and dealing with cancer. D.M.Earl wrote a fantastic story filled with emotion. Doc and Fern were a lovely couple & it was heartwarming to see how people become family.

she did an amazing, phenomenal job of writing

finding words to express what I want to say. this one was out of this world, it touched on a subject that is very hard for people to talk about much less read. I have to say I cried so much while reading this. she did an amazing, phenomenal job of writing, much less touching upon all these other topics that we as people do not always want to talk about. this is one of those that will pull at your heart strings, it will forever stay with you because it touches on so many subjects. I am telling you, you have to read it for yourself to truly understand what an amazing job she did, and how moved you will be. this story, these characters are like no one else, you will feel like something that you have never felt before. So, believe me when I say, you have to read this one with a box of kleenex, and it is a MUST READ, you will NEVER, be the same...for it touch's us like NOTHING else, and is one that move you like no other, you will be there every step of the way with them, you will cry, you will laugh, you will share in every one of there moments, that is how much she pulls you in...

Disappointed

It's first time I am not raving about Eric Kayser book. Previous books I purchased were not bread books though. But Eric Kayser is a baker first and foremost. I tried his breads when I visited France. They were really amazing. So when I heard his bread book is going to be out, I couldn't wait to get my hands on his recipes. Alas, was I disappointed! To begin with, I've been baking breads with natural levain for a number of years. I know from experience that both starter hydration and temperature schedule are very important if one wants to produce flavorful and healthy starter, not just the one that tastes one dimensionally sour. Well, Eric keeps his baking secret to himself. The sourdough starter recipe in the book comes to about 100% hydration. In the videos widely available one can see that his starter pours like a liquid pancake batter. So that's the first red flag for you! Then, he states that temperature is very important for developing flavorful starter but... he stops there and does not divulge the secret of his levain. I understand, it's his business, and there are professional secrets, etc. etc. Don't write the book then, man! In short, if you think that by following his recipes you'll be able to produce baguettes that look like his (p.66) with nice crackling crust and big irregular holes, don't hold your breath. You won't because his recipe produces a high density bread that I would never call a baguette. There are bakers who share their secrets and love doing so. To name just a couple, Chad Robertson (Tartine Bread) and Jeffrey Hamelman (Bread: A Baker's Book of Techniques and Recipes). For more advanced bakers there is also an excellent Advanced Bread and Pastry by Michael Suas but it's a lot more expensive and mostly geared toward professionals.I
learned a lot from those famous bakers. I was hoping to add new recipes to my collection when I purchased Eric Kayser's book. It turned out to be complete disappointment.

About the Author
Peter Cosgrove was born into an army family in Sydney in 1947 and graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon. He served initially with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment in Malaysia before joining the 9th Battalion at Nui Dat in South Vietnam. As a lieutenant, he was one of the thousands of Australians who fought in Vietnam, where he received the Military Cross - one of Australia's highest military honours. He led the International Forces in East Timor (INTERFET) in 1999-2000 and served as Chief of the Defence Force between 2002 and 2005. In 2001, he was named Australian of the Year.

Good, but for the conservatives!

Mr. Cosgrove, of course, was limited in what he could and couldn't write about the Australian Army. After all, he became one the highest ever ranking officers to write a memoir about about Australia's involvement in the Asia Pacific region over the last twenty years. What he did write was okay to good without being too controversial (mostly). Written extremely conservatively lead me to disagree with a few things, particularly about the 'children overboard' issue, but what else would you expect from a member of the Royal Australian Army and Five star general at that! I'm glad I read it and others want to know more about the man and life in the Australian Army would find it interesting too. An Australian of the Year and recently was rewarded with a knighthood, so he is now know as Sir Peter Cosgrove. Congratulations!

Bit of a slog

I found the book heavy going at times and nearly chucked it in at the half way mark. It is aptly named "My Story" as it devotes as much time to describing Cosgrove's home life as it does to major important events in recent Australian armed forces history. It reads like an expanded diary. Most disappointingly, I did not find the expected insights re the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and its role in the past and future for Australia and Asia in particular. I am a fan of Peter Cosgrove, as are most Australians, but overall I felt a unique opportunity has been missed for a most senior and very respected officer of the ADF to tell it "like it really is" as well as speak frankly and personally about the many events he was close to in his role as head of the ADF.

Scott Bryson is an associate professor of English at Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles. He has edited or co-edited several collections of criticism on nature writing, including Ecopoetry: A Critical Introduction, Twentieth-Century American Nature Poetry, and Twentieth-Century American Nature Writing: Prose. Another great Rick Steves book.

This book is slightly different than the Great Britain book in that it focuses primarily on England - not Scotland, Ireland,etc. That was precisely what I needed. It addressed several areas not covered in the Great Britain book as well as some that are covered, but this had more details. I bought the Kindle version because I didn't want the weight of the book in my suitcase and it works fine, but I do miss the ability to quickly flip from one section to another! If you are a seasoned traveler or a new one, Rick Steves books will work for you.

Rick Steves' guidebooks never fail to deliver. We are in York, England right now and have found his information invaluable. His maps are helpful, and we have especially liked his recommended walks. We have used his guides in the past (Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France). The places he has recommended for eating and sleeping have always been great!

Before you read the works of Chardin, read this!

This is a fine introduction to the prolific life and writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the most important theologian of the 20th century. Chardin's theology, banned for years by the Vatican, was at least a hundred years ahead of it's time. A geologist, palenthologist, mystic, spiritual lover, he proposed that Darwin's theories of evolution were not contrary to God's revelation but actually was Revelation.
King's book does a good job of detailing Chardin's life, his passions, his pursuits, his beliefs and his science. Though dry and slow at times, the author does help to illuminate the theology of someone who isn't easy to read. Though he lived a rich life, Chardin's writing can be somewhat cold and too scientific at times for the layreader to understand. This book, however, is good solid primer and should be the starting point for anyone interested in a man ahead of his time.

The Universe And Mankind Are Both Evolving Towards Perfection

Ursula King's biography of Teihard de Chardin is a fascinating book written in a style which makes a difficult subject seem quite understandable. King weaves the story of Teihard's life around snapshots of his constantly maturing vision of God, the universe and mankind.

Known for his original concepts such as the ongoing evolution of both the universe and mankind towards perfection and the existence of a global network of self-awareness, Teihard was always regarded as a loose canon by the Vatican. Consequently, not much of his work was released during his lifetime except for those relatively few items which were privately published and distributed among a circle of his friends. Since his death in 1955 all his books and essays have been made available to the general public. Teihard nurtured close, supportive relationships with a small number of caring females and left many letters which reveal the importance of these women in his life.

Although at times he is difficult to comprehend, there is no doubt that Teihard ranks as one of the most prominent thinkers of the twentieth century. The fact that he is recognized as a famous and respected scientist as well as a mystic, greatly increases his significance.

Excellent Introduction to a Life

Fr. Chardin is someone who has touched my heart deeply from the time I first heard about him many years ago. I was fascinated by the few things I heard about his philosophy and theology. I also hear a lot of new-age citations of him that sound like foolishness. His only work that I read with understanding was "Mass on the World." This short piece was a window into a beautiful soul. Ms. King's work is a sweeping and breathtaking panorama of his life and thought. Her observations are well documented with quotes and pictures of his life and works. I am particularly impressed with how she honors his fidelity to the church's magisterium and his vows.
I read this book in three segments. I had to pause to absorb the magnitude of what I read and experienced. The first part was his early life ending with his service in WWI. I remain astounded at his bravery and his complete experience of all the most horrible battles of that war. I do wish the author had made clearer what bored him about the study of Thomas Aquinas. Was he reading poor presentations of Thomas' thought or what problem did he see in Thomas. At his time in Fr. Chardin's life, Thomas was being resurrected by fellow jesuits, one of them, Henri de Lubac, was a close friend. Also J. Maritan and E. Gilson were active. The second segment was his life's work and exile to China. I remain amazed at the energy he gave to science and writing. A powerful mind was at work to make sense of what he learned. I was exhaused reading of his exploits. The third segment was his closing years and his infirmimity. This was a prayerful reading. I was especially touched by his words to a friend, "I always feel God's presence now." The only shortfall I'm seeing in Fr. Chardin's life work is how to get where he saw the need to go. How to learn how I can best make Christ present. Too many new-agers have co-opted Fr. Chardin to make us think we can pull ourselves up by the bootstraps to evolve to the next age. All evolution is in God's Providence.
This book really brought Fr. Chardin to life and helped me understand his meaning and message. Another title that brought Fr. Chardin to life is "For the Time Being" by Annie Dillard. Read and Enjoy.

Loved it!

Warm and touching story about how sometimes family is made by the heart, not by blood.
I loved both Eve and Ben, they are both complex, seen and experienced more, when it comes to family, than most. They both carry their own scars, their issues, and get a crash course to some hidden ones they were not aware of.
Their dating isn't the most smooth and effortless romance you ever heard of. When I was reading about all the problems and turmoil they run into, I kept thinking this is the perfect guidebook to what not to say, ask, or do when dating! Also Ben's adorable daughter, and his lingering feelings for his ex-wife, cause even more issues.
But the big one comes, when they end up on the opposite sides of a murder case, and then start mirroring the suspects into their own lives, and their relationships.
This is a warm hearted story of a family, and two detectives, trying to find the light and normalcy in life, after their other daughter is found years after being kidnapped as a young kid. How this tragedy affects all of them, what are the consequences of it, and how the daughters find a surprising friendship, and then sisters in each other.
The family that forms at the end, some tight to each other by blood, but bound together by love and commitment to each other, filled with devotion and fondness for each other.
I loved this story, it is so easy to relate to the highly likeable characters, to the story of a hard life, and to the range of emotions, Ben and Eve goes through, while trying to find their footing in the world

Have always like JKJ. Interesting story

Have always like JKJ. Interesting story, but more and more, her dialogue is becoming annoyingly outdated. Some at Harlequin needs to step in and modernize things. "What say we go inside..?" Um, no. No one talks like that. "Let's go inside"

And the most cringe-worthy: "Tut tut". Just no. Never.

Otherwise the story is creative and heart-felt!

The Wolf in the Fold

In Hope's Shadow by Janice Kay Johnson is the second book in the Two Daughters series. It is even better than the first book, Yesterday's Gone. JKJ is at her best with a complex plot full of wonderful characters, and one of the most terrifying villains she has painted in the guise of a handsome teenager. Read this during daylight hours, and beware of your neighbors.
