With this comprehensive, insightful, and spirited opus, Sachar (Modern History/George Washington Univ.; A History of Israel, 1976 and 1977, etc.) rises to the position of preeminent Jewish historian of our day. Sachar's study aims far above the ``Look Who's Jewish'' genre of pop Jewish-American history, yet there are passages about men of Jewish descent who sponsored Columbus's voyages, speculation about the Jewishness of Abraham Lincoln's ancestry, and, much later, lists of Jewish entertainers, scientists, scholars, etc., whose Jewishness was often less than relevant. Sachar is at his best when succinctly presenting a generation's grappling with social, philosophical, political, and theological issues after major Jewish milestones like the influx of Eastern European immigrants, the Holocaust, and the Six-Day War. Both the ``beatification'' and ``martyrology'' of Holocaust study and the new religion of Israelism are critically discussed. Sachar has a historian's gift for mapping out the key crossroads facing the American Jewish community at each major juncture, from the American Revolution to the current ``quota crisis'' with the black community. He then offers a journalist's-eye view of the major figures behind the ideas and movements. Journalist Sachar can be rather subjective as he paints Orthodox rabbis (``hairshirt tribalists'') like Bernard Revel as amoral opportunists, and liberal secularists like Rabbi Stephen Wise as intrepid pioneers. Most laypeople of any stripe, though, will appreciate his saucy dismissal of most American rabbis as ``preening pulpiteers, social climbers, publicity and financial bonus seekers.'' In his reviews of major cultural figures, Sachar praises anyone that Irving Howe likes and trashes celebrated artists like Elie Wiesel--and, while noting that America has always swallowed up her Jews, he favors saccharine projections about the children of intermarried couples being ``raised as Jews.'' A reliable guide and reference

I found this book an excellent foundation for understanding the many
faces of American Judaism. I had the opportunity to read the whole
book cover to cover while recovering from an accident, and found that
it fleshed out facets of the Jewish experience I had heard about
elsewhere. Some of my perceptions of history were challenged, all were
deepened. And I still use it as a reference.

An excellent depiction of the struggle of jews to find peace and prosperity.

Howard Sachar hasn't missed a beat in his excellent book. He has captured the struggle of a persecuted people to adapt and find a home in one of the few places in world where they would find freedom and fulfillment. He tells all, the good and the bad. People who have made America the great place it is as will as those who were involved in the darker side of life.

Say What?

I turned to this book to learn about Jews in colonial America and was annoyed by the obvious errors in it. For instance, on page 20 he cites the Uniform Naturalization Act of 1790 as an act that allowed Jewish colonists in America to be naturalized. You don't have to know much history to catch that a British act passed in 1790, well after American independence, won't have any effect on Jewish "colonists." Yet Sachar, confused, states that "one hundred fifty of them acquired naturalization between 1740 and 1776." Time travel, I suppose. It gets better when you do some poking and find that there was no British act by this name, but there certainly was an American naturalization act that year. It was connected with the Alien and Sedition Acts and had no effect on the situation of American Jews. Yet Sachar says the "The Uniform Naturalization Act -- the first Jewish emancipatory measure to be issued by a modern European government -- in effect acknowledged the existing fact of Jewish security and stability in colonial America."

Rewarding for future data science specialists; a tough read for those lacking some basic knowledge of the fundamentals

I have a somewhat different take on this book than the other two reviews posted to date. However, I've read them both, and they're legitimately laudatory, so please read on.

I posted a brief review on Quora.com -- where I first read about the book -- as follows:

"Interesting reading. I was expecting/hoping for a little more in the way of case studies, food for thought about conceptualization of data requirements and use of big data, etc. However, if you have an entrepreneurial bent or are interested in understanding more about how some of the number wizards look at industry uses of data, it's worth a read."

To amplify on this take, I'd like to make it clear that I approached it from a general reader's perspective... as a potential user of big data and as someone looking to learn more about how to make the leap from owning a bucketful of information to turning it into real knowledge. That kind of work is still needed; this isn't it. The worlds of data science and customers of the fruits of data science still are pretty widely separated.

That said, this book appears to be an excellent atlas to the specialty and the solid guide to the best route toward formation of data science practitioners (although definitely outside my experience enough that at least a good chunk of its wisdom probably was lost on me). I also got a sense that it offers insights that might help data scientists become better at reaching out to potential users of their services, which also would be a positive.

So, for those in the target audience, possessing at least some of the basic quantitative and analytic skills the field requires, I'd unequivocally endorse this book. For others (like me), it can serve as a means of understanding at least some of the skill set that can be expected of data science practitioners. However, it's a lot tougher read without at least some background in the area, and I have a strong sense that I didn't get everything out of it that was there for data science cognoscenti.

Useless, toxic

I'm a software engineer working in machine learning. I guess you could call that data science. I expected a book of case studies, refined techniques, and insights I could use in my own work. Instead I got this substanceless fluff, a huge collection of softball interview questions ("What do you do? How did you get where you are? Where are you going?"), and an unpleasant sampling of startup culture. When the second interviewee in a row strongly recommended cutting back on sleep in order to get more work done, I skimmed through the rest of it and threw it out in disgust.

Great book for those aspiring to become data scientists!!!!!

I am new to the field of Analytics/Data Science. This book has given me some invaluable advice as to how to reach my goal of becoming a data scientist. If I can accomplish at least 50% of what these top-notch data scientists have accomplished, in the next 4-5 years, I'd consider that to be a great achievement. They have shown me the direction and now it's my turn to make it happen.

"This is a very compelling story-a universal story-difficult to believe anyone could have told it better. Alther handles narrative and characters like a truly gifted film director or cinematographer. We are in Rudy's head, but the camera sweeps, darts, settles, focusing on one aspect and then another of the well-developed supporting cast. Location and action merge effortlessly into memorable scenes, and the often troubling past is filtered through the emerging present leaving narrator and reader (as Rudy says after hearing Mahler) "hushed, drained, somehow elevated." There is never an awkward sentence or a sentiment that disappoints.

'There is no map for the human heart.' `Flaws define perfection.'

Now and then a novel comes along that is so rich and so satisfying that after reading it once for the mesmerizing story, the natural order of things is to immediately read it again to luxuriate in the splendid prose, the sensitive insights, the perfect craftsmanship of construction that bears memorizing in spots. Such is Richard Alther's THE SCAR LETTERS. Perhaps part of the degree of impact this novel creates is due to the times - the significant changes that are happening in Equal Rights especially evident in the country's reversal of rules, if not altered opinion, about same sex relationships. But no, this novel can stand alone in any literary company and still be dazzling. It is without a doubt the finest novel of the year for this reader.

One aspect of the theme is that it addresses love and the search for same in middle aged protagonists, instead of yet another coming of age first love story, or a marriage on the rocks with attendant devastation and the journey either down or hopefully up for the two people involved. Another theme is the scars of abuse from peers, scars that may physically fade a bit but impact the psyche in such a manner that growing beyond them can be permanent - or not. And even another fresh aspect is the telling of passionate encounters without ever slipping into the trough of R rated now too popular sensuality or beyond.

Rudy Dallman was raised by his grandparents, unwanted by his birth parents, was slightly portly as a kid, came to recognize his gay self around age twelve but couldn't act on that directly - only with normal `guys acting out' sessions. At age 20 he seeks company in a gay bar, notices a couple of young lads, leaves the bar and is attacked in the park where he has gone to cruise. The two boys beat him, cut two Fs on the skin of his chest (for F***y and F****t) and sexually assault him with a toilet plunger handle. This is noted by the police who do nothing to the boys - nor do they come to his aid. Life just proceeds. Rudy becomes a flower tender and lives alone with only a good friend, the buff and sexually promiscuous Tex, and a therapist named Jack who has issues of his own, as friends. Rudy, at Tex's encouraging, attempts dating through internet, meets the sexy Blake who is available only for temporary encounters, and finally decides at both Jack's and Tex's bidding to look back into his always submerged sexual assault of the past, discovers the locations of the two lads who are now men, and how Rudy meets the adult versions of his assailants and relates to them is far too well sculpted and considered to say more. That is the bare bones of this intricately complex and immensely satisfying drama - the bones being housed in the flesh of a master writer whose skill bears watching and deserves applause.

Every chapter of the book is introduced by some stated facts of how gay men have been punished through history - terrifying to read, difficult to ignore. It is a catalytic agent that drives the book forward. Yet for all the negative history of both these unfortunates and the psyches of almost all the characters of this story, a consistent philosophy rises. `So either-or is a falsehood. Perception like life is a cornucopia of options, as in circling a traffic rotary and exiting here and there, always a tentative new turn.' `You can lighten dark.' Jack sighs, not with impatience now but the reverse, a calming exhale that embraces. `That's why you're here. And as you said once before, Rudy, some bad with the good is essential for and defines the other. Makes us whole.' THE SCAR LETTERS is a profound autopsy of bruised lives from the past and an offering of a reassuring hug that life can indeed go on. Grady Harp, September 13

This in an inspiring human story!

If I had the ability to write as well and with as much insight as Grady Harp, I would have expressed my appreciation of this book in those exact words. The Scar Letters has a beginning brimming with incomprehensible pain and although difficult to read at first, Mr. Alther draws us in deeply and we become fully engaged in Rudy's beautiful soul. I think the Scar Letters is a great book which I will read again soon to absorb even more fully the beautiful way the book flowed, the beautiful sentences and the most mesmerizing and haunting tale (told within the book itself) of Pieter and Willem. The prose was smooth and intelligent and the characters were so real to me. I fell madly in love with Rudy first and foremost but loved both Tex and Jack even knowing their oh-so-human flaws. Mr. Alther should be very very proud of this literary achievement. I wish him all the success in the world.

An Incredible Journey

Richard Alther chronicles the amazingly touching journey of his main character, Rudy Dallman, in The Scar Letters. Rudy has an experience that forces him into a place of deep despair and terror in the beginning of this book. Subsequent chapters examine his search to heal and come to a place of peace with himself and the world around him. With the help of his best friend and a therapist, he is eventually able to thrive and relish in the pleasures life has to offer. All of these stages are portrayed by an incredibly talented storyteller who engages the reader as Rudy faces both highs and lows. Important social topics are woven throughout that will help to bring about much needed conversation. The Scar Letters is a relevant and important addition to the genre of gay hate crimes as well as being an enthralling read. Highly recommended!

About the Author

Elizabeth D. Hutchison, MSW, PhD, received her MSW from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis and her PhD from the University at Albany, State University of New York. She was on the faculty in the Social Work Department at Elms College from 1980 to 1987, and served as chair of the department from 1982 to 1987. She was on the faculty in the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1987 to 2009, where she taught courses in human behavior and the social environment, social work and social justice, and child and family policy; she also served as field practicum liaison. She has been a social worker in health, mental health, aging, and child and family welfare settings. She is committed to providing social workers with comprehensive, current, and useful frameworks for thinking about human behavior. Her other research interests focus on child and family welfare. She currently lives in Rancho Mirage, California where she is active in environmental justice issues facing farm workers in East Coachella Valley.

Holly C. Matto, M.S.W., Ph.D., received her M.S.W from the University of Michigan and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. Holly is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she teaches courses in Human Behavior and the Social Environment and research methodology. Her social work practice experience and current research interests are in substance abuse treatment.

Leanne W. Charlesworth, LMSW, Ph.D., received her M.S.W from the University at Albany and PhD from Virginia Commonwealth University. Leanne is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at Nazareth College of Rochester, where she teaches a variety of courses including Human Behavior and the Social Environment. She has served in child protection and other capacities within child welfare systems and has been an evaluation consultant to diverse public and private human service agencies. Her research and practice interests focus on poverty, child and family well-being, and child welfare system issues.

Pamela A. Viggiani, LMSW, Ph.D., received her M.S.W. and her PhD from the University at Albany. Pamela is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Social Work at Nazareth College of Rochester where she teaches courses in Social Justice, Social Advocacy, Diversity, Policy, and Social Work Methods. She has worked in schools with at risk children and has served as the legislative liaison for the National Association of Social Workers, New York State Chapter. Daniel Simberloff is Professor of Environmental Studies and Director of the Institute for Biological Invasions at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. a must read for anyone who cares about our world

This is a good, thorough and comprehensive book about the disasters that non-native invasive species cause. It is a must read for everyone including policy makers and invasive species ecologists, especially those who keep trying to introduce more problems in misguided attempts to solve already introduced problems. This book give depth to my research in finding native answers to non-native problems, bioeradication.

The book could be edited a bit, but provides a huge amount of information in a palatable form.

As other reviews have noted, the book could use better organization, and perhaps some editing, as it is nearly twice as long as other books in the same series. It could also use more illustrations and some maps. It is also somewhat more technical than other books in the series, closer to a textbook than a book designed for the casual readers. That said, it is a quite good introduction to a surprisingly complex subject, and while a couple of the chapters are somewhat technical, most provide a great deal of information with rather a lot of examples.

A reader can pick and choose among the chapters. The following are the ones I think most interesting. Chapter 2 assesses biological invasions in terms of magnitude, geography and time. Chapters 3 and 4 examine the ecological effects of invasions. Chapter 6 is important, looking at how and why they occur. Chapter 7 asks if we can predict them. Chapter 8 is important but rather dull reading, on how biological invasions are regulated (not very well, by the way). Chapter 9 is the most technical, on detection and eradication. Worth noting is that technology is evolving quickly and it is possible that genetic modifications will soon be used to counter biological invasions.

Chapter 11 examines controversies surrounding the subject, including is eradicating invasive species xenophobic and related to racism and aren't invasive species also god's creatures (the author deals with these rather well). Chapter 12 is important, but seems to me to be incomplete, dealing with the 'homogeocene" meaning the probable future when life everywhere on the planet is essentially the same.

More Than What You Need to Know

This is a very good source or reference work. In fact the table of contents would make a good outline for a course on Invasive Species Management. The main feature is large lists of examples of a large range of invasive species issues; and there are a huge number of these examples. There is a very useful long list and index of species. The bibliography lists not only research and reference works but also a substantial list of web sites. As research the book is fairly well written and complete. This work is recommended for students or researcers in Invasive Species.

However, the subtitle reads 'What Everyone Needs to Know' and this means the book was meant for the general reader. The writing style is academic, as you get in research journal papers: basic, accurate, informative, and dull. The format is rather boring if you are not looking for something specific. There is a tendency to wordiness. Finally, this is much more than 'Everyone Needs to Know'. For research this very good. For the general reader rather lacking.
