Gr 5–8—It's been three years since the events chronicled in One Realm Beyond (Zondervan, 2014), and Cantor has spent all that time growing physically, if not emotionally. His quest to find his elderly mentors, plus, of course, a way to save their realm from alien invasion, hasn't been going well, and he hasn't seen his companions Bixby or Dukmee in two years. That changes by order of Bixby's parents, and the three are reunited just in time to have several more adventures, including rescuing Chomountain (aka the right hand of Primen) from his overlong fishing vacation (due to amnesia) and discovering a variety of useful tools and texts in a series of booby-trapped libraries and the like. Newcomers to the series include Neekoh, who has inherited the generations-long and painfully lonely task of searching for Chomountain; Tegan, another Realm Walker with memory issues of his own; and several new dragons. Everything leads up to a righteous battle against the buglike Lymen invaders. Memory and change are the important themes. Who has been stealing the memories of so many, including Chomountain, Realm Walkers, and Mor Dragons? Why is Cantor having such a hard time accepting his goofy but talented shape-shifting dragon and his changing feelings for the oh-so-girly but supremely competent Bixby? VERDICT Fans of the first book will appreciate the opportunity to meet up with old friends, and will look forward to future adventures.—Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library
Review
Donita K. Paul continues her fantasy series aimed at middle school readers where dragons and humans fight side by side in a battle against evil in their realms. (The first in the series, One Realm Beyond, was reviewed in the Christian Library Journal, January-February 2014.) In Two Renegade Realms, several years have passed since the attack by the corrupt Realm Walker Guild. Cantor D’Ahma and Bixby D’Mazeline have gone their own ways. During that time, Cantor has grown 15 inches in height while searching for his long-lost mentors. Meanwhile Bixby and Dukmee have been hunting for the lost Library of Lymes. The king and queen ask Cantor to find the ancient information needed by the realm. In doing so, he meets up with Bixby and Dukmee. Together, Cantor, Bixby, and Dukmee try to find the ancient Library of Lymes. They are also asked to rescue Chomountain (the legendary realm walker) from his imprisonment. Faced with the impending invasion, they must find a way to find the answers they need, both to rescue Chomountain and to fight against the intruders on the renegade realms. Though they fight valiantly, the war is not over yet. Middle school readers will enjoy this fantasy series with its excellent world-building, descriptive narrative, and endearing characters. The faith element is allegorical, and violence is appropriate where the battles take place. Readers will find themselves caught up in the antics of the dragon Bridger and his sister, as well as the idiosyncrasies of Chomountain. Recommended for public libraries and school collections. Fans of Donita Paul’s earlier series and fantasy fans will not be disappointed! Carol R. Gehringer, CLJ (Christian Library Journal)

The struggle isn't in deciding if I liked it- I did
By Heidi
I've been trying to figure out how I will write this review since I finished the book Sunday night. The struggle isn't in deciding if I liked it- I did. And I will reread it. Where I'm stuck is Two Renegade Realms, while having a very clear start and finish, feels so much like the middle of a story. I turned the last page and thought 'well yes, but what happens next?'It doesn't feel fitting and right to give a review now, because the story doesn't feel over yet!
That said, I will try. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. I enjoy how thoroughly different the world is for our heroes-- yet how alike. Donita K Paul has a rare gift for dropping in truths that subtly seep into the pages without being over coming the story with a sense of 'And Now I will Teach You Something'.
Oftentimes fantasy is an escape. Sometimes that escape can lead to looking upon your own life and everything feeling grey. I think I figured out what makes Donita K Paul's books different. And actually, when I was younger, it was something that annoyed me. In all of her books the characters will stop and have a meal. Attention is paid to meals, clothing, care for others. I remember reading one of her books and the characters are just about to save the day!....and they stop and have a picnic. When I first read it I was gesturing on the inside 'they're right there! Why are you waiting!?'. But now I think I understand. The real magic isn't in a dragon that can turn into a ball of yarn, but in sitting with friends and enjoying a meal. In delighting in new lace for a skirt. Small moments shared with those around you. And that is why these books are so good.
But seriously, the next one needs to come out soon because I want to know what happens next.

The Realm Walkers Return!
By The Artist Librarian
I've been waiting to read "Two Renegade Realms" since I finished "One Realm Beyond!" Three years after the events of "One Realm Beyond," all of our favorite characters are reunited for an important mission. However, the legendary Chomountain isn't what they expected and the now rogue Realm Walkers will have to work together to avert a disastrous intersection of the realms.
With the time skip comes surprises such as Cantor's growth spurt, leaving him much taller than his peers. It leads to a lot of fun moments when he reunites with his old friends. Bixby, the daughter of royalty, is as bubbly and petite as ever. I spent half the book trying to figure out if the author is planning to romantically pair her with Cantor. They have a sweet friendship right now, along with several moments that feel like they're flirting with something more. It makes me wonder why Mrs. Paul created such a height difference between the two ... (I'm sure it's intentional). Scholarly Dukemee and Bridger, the slightly klutzy dragon, completes the entertaining ensemble cast. Ending on a slight cliffhanger (again), it'll be interesting to see how this trilogy close (I'm assuming the title will have a "three" in it somewhere). ;-)
As someone who has read a lot of fantasy novels, the absence of a character list/glossary and a map was very noticeable. I think the books could really benefit from their inclusion --especially if someone is jumping in mid-series or if it's been awhile since you read the first novel (like me).
While she often incorporates fantasy-type magic, there is always a creator or God-like figure that orders her fantasy worlds. Though listed as teen fiction, I'd recommend Donita K. Paul's books to upper elementary students and older that love clean fantasy. Her content practically always "all ages appropriate" (think of her as a grandmother telling a story).

Another Fantastic Dragon Adventure!
By Kiri Liz
Where to begin? Where to begin? Donita K. Paul has done it again! Dragons, adventure, danger... what more would you want in a fantasy novel?
I was very muchly excited when I was able to obtain a copy of this book to review. No matter that I haven't read the first book yet, but I'm planning on picking up a copy of that one just as soon as I'm able. *coughs* Moving on... Two Renegade Realms was definitely a fun read. There were a few little things that seemed a bit confusing, but that would be quickly mended if I had read the aforementioned first book first. The characters are lively and memorable, the plot was active and engaging, and I ended reading with a hunger for the next book.
Frankly, I'm having trouble writing this review, because it's easier for me to write reviews for books I didn't enjoy. Yeah, I'm weird like that. My favorite character, without a doubt, was Bridger, the shapeshifting dragon. I could understand Cantor's frustration with him as Bridger tended to be a little on the oblivious and careless side, but he was so hilarious! Mrs. Paul has a terrific talent in giving each one of her dragons special personality. Even though most of her books include dragons as main characters/elements, the dragons in each series are so unique. I think that's one thing I love about her novels so much -- tons of dragons, yet it's never the same dragon twice.
I also really liked Cantor's character development. More somber than most, Cantor is stuck with Bridger as his constant (dragon companion for the realm walkers), and he is not secret in his desire for a new constant. Bridger bears his complaints well, but he doesn't want to leave Cantor. Their teamwork got better as the novel progressed, and by the end -- well, now I can't give away everything, now can I?
The portals are incredibly epic. Just thought I'd point that out.
Advisory: Some fantasy fighting and descriptions of battles, but nothing terribly graphic. A group of foreign/alien invaders are written as being awful enemies, gruesome and despicable. In one scene, they eat people, including babies which they seem to think a delicacy. It was the most violent thing I can recall from one of Mrs. Paul's books, but it's not portrayed graphically.
Other things to note quickly would be scenes of injuries/sicknesses. Nothing big, but two of the main characters in the book are healers, so it's natural to expect that. Also, some suggestions of romance, but nothing really comes of it.
*Please note: I received a copy of this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest review.*
